You adopt a hazelnut tree from our farm in Mezzanego (Italia). When placing the adoption you can choose a name which we will use to identify your hazelnut tree. Hazelnut cultivation in rural areas of Liguria dates back to the 15th century and represents an important economic resource for our area. Until the early 1980s, between our municipality of Mezzanego and neighbouring municipalities there were about 380 hectares of cultivated hazelnut groves. Unfortunately, for various reasons, the following years brought a massive abandonment of the hazelnut harvest with worrisome consequences related to hydrogeological instability. The hazelnut is a busy and prolific pollen-bearing plant, luxuriant and rapidly developing with an expanded crown and a smooth brown-greyish bark. It has a very extensive and bundled root system that can reach more than one meter in depth which helps to prevent landslides. Landslides are now very common in our area attesting to the importance of the hazelnut tree in maintaining our terraces. In 2016, our interest in the area led us to dedicate part of our work to the recovery of hazelnut groves, ancient crops that characterize this landscape, so much so that the landscape is a candidate for the National Register of Historic Rural Landscapes. To date we can say that, thanks to the collaboration of the Genoa Chamber of Commerce, some municipalities, the essential support of various local growers and food production companies owned by individuals such as Piero Barbieri who is a true ambassador of the local hazelnut, it has been possible to register the collective trademark “Misto Chiavari” to protect our hazelnuts. There are eight varieties, each with unique characteristics and somewhat curious dialectal names: Bocca Cioxa, Mennoia, Tapparona, Cioxetta, Balunna, Trietta, Dall'orto and Del rosso. What makes our hazelnuts special is the excellent organoleptic quality due above all to this mix of indigenous varieties. The hand-picked hazelnut harvest takes place between the end of August and the beginning of September and is work, shared with others in a joyful way. After the drying phase, done naturally on terraces or wooden floors, the shelling begins. Among the opportunities to discover the “Misto Chiavari” hazelnuts is Hazelnut Day, the local holiday involving all of our municipalities at the beginning of December. Your adoption is 50 years old and its maximum lifespan is 60 years. For as long as you want to keep your adoption, and we can continue taking care of it, you can renew year after year. If your adoption stops producing for any reason, we will replace it with another, and guarantee you the delivery from the production of other units. Your adoption produces an average of 3kg of hazelnuts each season. With this amount we can produce around 1.04kg of roasted hazelnuts and hazelnut spreads.
Each season we will send you a box with: 2 x __Hazelnut spread “Chiavarina"__ (200g, glass jar) 2 x __Hazelnut spread “Gold”__ (200g, glass jar) 2 x __Toasted hazelnuts__ (120g, glass jar) The __hazelnut spreads__ are handcrafted by our partner Piero Barbieri using “Misto Chiavari” hazelnuts, sugar, and organic cocoa. Extra virgin olive oil PDO Riviera Ligure Levante from our PDO certified olive grove is added to the “Gold” spread. The hazelnut spreads are sweet; you can taste the sweet buttery flavour of the hazelnuts. The oil gives them a unique flavour and thick texture. You can use the hazelnut spread on bread for breakfast or as a snack during the day. The __hazelnuts__ are toasted directly by Piero Barbieri and are supplied by the Cooperative members. Toasted hazelnuts have a bitter-sweet taste and are suitable for the preparation of sauces or as a tasty breading for the preparation of seafood or meat. The intense taste is enhanced by the few ingredients used: simplicity is the best ingredient! The products should be stored in a cool, dry place at room temperature and not above 30°C.
