Adopt an artichoke plant from the farm "Bioplus" in Canicatti (Italia) and receive your harvest in the form of organic artichokes at home. Francesco will take care of your adoption and take its picture. Also, you will be able to download the adoption certificate and, if you wish, plan your visit to the farm. You do not enter into any long-term commitment: although your adoption will be renewed automatically, you will always be informed in advance and may decide to cancel your adoption at any time as long as the preparation has not yet begun.

¿Qué adoptas?

You adopt an artichoke plant from our farm in Canicatti (Italia). The cultivation here is certified as organic by the European Union since 2013. During the process of adoption you can choose a name which we will use to identify your artichoke plant. The artichoke is one of the oldest vegetables on earth, it was already known and appreciated by the ancient Egyptians who spread it throughout the Mediterranean. It arrived in Sicily in the fifteenth century and spread throughout Italy. We cultivate the Sicilian violet artichoke. Unlike most vegetables, the artichoke is a perennial plant, very similar to the thistle, from which it differs in its edible characteristics because its flowers are eaten instead of the stems. The artichoke is cultivated with a self-propagating bulb, which produces a plant that lives 3 to 4 years and produces 15 to 20 heads per year. The stem, which is around 50 to 150cm high, is sturdy and longitudinally striped; it branches out during flowering, carrying the blossoms in a terminal position. The leaves are alternate, large, of a more or less intense green colour, sometimes greyish on the upper side, paler and hairy on the bottom; the presence of thorns is a varietal characteristic. The blue hermaphrodite flowers are grouped and shaped like a crown, also called a calatid. The crown includes a base (fleshy receptacle). Together with the inner bracts it form the edible part of the artichoke, commonly known as the heart. The natural winter rains are used for irrigation but in dry periods drip systems are used. The treatments carried out on the plant are only those permitted in Organic Farming. Your adoption is 2 years old and its productive life is around 3 years. For as long as you want to keep it and we can continue taking care of it, you can renew your adoption year after year. If your adoption dies, we will replace it with no additional cost assuring the delivery of your harvest from others. Your artichoke plant produces an average of 20kg of organic artichokes each season. You do not have to commit to the consumption of the whole harvest. Each season you may decide what quantity to reserve and pay the maintenance in accordance with that amount. This way you will only pay for what you consume and will be able to sell any remaining harvest to others.

During the season, you will be able to receive the harvest that you are reserving now: a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 5 boxes. Once you paid for the adoption, you will be able to plan your shipments from your user account. Shipping format: __4kg box of organic artichokes__ * Sicilian violet artichoke (November-April): ovoid in shape, covered with a few outer bracts that are also edible and purple in colour, but the tastiest part is found inside - the heart; the flavour is sweet with a pleasant bitter aftertaste and a tender and full-bodied texture * Organic farming certified by the European Organic Farming label since 2013 * Picked the day before shipment at their optimal point of ripeness and shipped in a cardboard box without plastics * In the kitchen, artichokes are used in soups; they are also good baked and au gratin; they can be a perfect side dish for fish or meat dishes or used to make delicious preserves in oil * If you keep them in the fridge, they can last 10 days in good condition
