You adopt 25m² of a lentil and camelina plot from our farm in Neu-Ulm (Alemania). The cultivation here is certified as organic by the European Union as of 2017 and follows the Bioland guidelines. The cultivation of the lentil (*lens culinaris*) for consumption dates back to the Neolithic Age. It is one of the oldest cultivated plants. Due to various factors, it was no longer cultivated in Germany after about 1960. For some years now, lentils have been cultivated again in our region of Swabia; the sandy, calcareous soil is very suitable for the frugal plants. However, it is also important to maintain cultivation breaks of at least 5 years on the same plot, which then again limits the possible amount of cultivation. Starting in 2017, we have integrated lentils into our crop rotation. As a so-called grain legume, it has a number of positive properties, including promoting soil life and storing nitrogen from the air in the soil. In addition, a considerable amount of carbon, which was previously removed from the atmosphere as CO² by the plants, enters the soil through the harvest and root residues of the legumes. Some of this carbon is finally incorporated into humus compounds by soil organisms and microorganisms and thus stored in the soil for longer periods. In this way, legumes additionally contribute to climate protection and at the same time increase the humus content of the soil. We have opted for cultivation in a mixture. This means that the lentils are grown together with another crop as a support crop, in our case the oilseed crop camelina. This gives the plant stability and also suppresses weeds (mixed cultivation). The camlina in turn benefits from the nitrogen stored in the soil by the lentils, which acts as fertilizer. *Camelina sativa* belongs to the cruciferous family and is an old native crop with few soil and climate requirements. It flowers yellow and serves as food for bees. Cultivation in spring on our farmland is organic, no chemical pesticides or mineral fertilizers are used. Weed control is exclusively mechanical and can only be done during a certain period of time. Then the field is not touched again until late summer and is thus available to insects and small animals for a long time, including the flowering period. Our fields are harvested with a combine harvester. Each lentil and camelina plot produces an average of 2kg of lentils and 1kg of camelina seeds for the production of 250ml of camelina oil per season.
Each season we will send you a box with: 4 x __green-marbled lentils of the Anicia variety__ (500 g bags each) 1 x __camelina oil __(250 ml, glass bottle with screw cap) The __green-marbled lentils __have a beautiful, slightly nutty aroma. They do not need to be soaked before cooking and have a pleasant bite. It does not fall apart during cooking and is suitable for a wide variety of dishes, such as stews, salads, roasts and as a side dish. The cooking time is approx. 20 - 30 minutes, depending on your preference. The shelf life is at least 1 year if stored in a cool and dry place. The __camelina oil__ has a beautiful yellow colour and a pea-like, fresh taste. It is cold-pressed and rich in omega 3 fatty acids. Camelina oil is suitable for cold dishes such as salads, herb curds or other dips and for vegetable dishes. As a garnish on a vegetable soup or as a substitute for pumpkin seed oil on a pumpkin soup, it is a delight. The shelf life is at least 9 months if stored in a cool and dark place.

After harvesting, the two crops have to be separated and cleaned in a complex process so that in the end only our two crops remain separated. Drying may be necessary as the camelina needs a certain moisture for the oil pressing and the lentil must not be too moist in order to be packaged and to be able to be kept for a long time. Your lentils and camelina oil will then be ready for shipment in December.
