The project

Adopt 5m² of a vegetable plot from "Verdcamp" in Cambrils (Spain) and receive your organic winter veggie box at home. Ernest will take care of your adoption and take its picture. You will also be able to download the adoption certificate, and if you wish, plan your visit to the farm. You do not enter into any long-term commitment: Although your adoption will be renewed automatically, you will always be informed in advance and may decide to cancel your adoption at any time as long as the preparation has not yet begun.

What do you adopt?

You adopt 5m² of a vegetable plot from our farm in Cambrils (Spain). The cultivation here is certified as organic by the European Union as of 2010. The vegetables that you'll receive are the result of tireless hard work on our farm. The box contains pumpkins (from the Cucurbit family), kohlrabi and cabbages (from the Brassicaceae family), leeks (from the Amaryllidaceae family), beetroot (from the Amaranthaceae family), and the ever-popular fennel (from the Apiaceae family). Although some of them, such as cabbages, come from outside Spain, they're all perfectly adapted to the Mediterranean climate. All this produce is grown on our farm in Cambrils located just a few kilometres from the sea, which gives us a typical Mediterranean climate with hot and dry summers and mild and occasionally rainy winters. All the crops, except the pumpkins, are planted in the late summer, when daylight hours start to decrease and the hot weather starts to ease off. We plant them all in a seedbed (in other words, a seed tray with alveoli) and when the plants have sprouted and grown a few centimetres, we transplant them to the field where they'll grow further and produce vegetables. At the same time as we plant the crops, we intersperse them with flowering plants that act as habitats for a multitude of insects. The pumpkin included in the box has its own bit of history: it's a native variety from our region and although it's much less productive than conventional varieties, we know that it works as it's perfectly adapted to our climate. The pumpkins are harvested at the end of summer and stored outdoors so that they last until the winter months. What makes these organic crops so special is that they're surrounded by flowers. After much research and plenty of trial and error, we realised that we have to provide a space where beneficial insects and our crops live side by side in order to engage in organic farming and keep pests under control. We've christened this type of agriculture 'floral intercropping'. Your vegetable plot produces an average of 5kg of organic winter veggie box each season. You do not have to commit to ordering the entire harvest though. Each season you can decide how much you want to reserve, and you pay the maintenance cost according to that amount. This way you only pay for what you plan to consume, and we can offer any surplus harvest to others.

What will you receive?

During the season, you will be able to receive the harvest that you are reserving now: a minimum of 1 and a maximum of 1 boxes. Once you have paid for the adoption, you will be able to plan your shipments from your user account. Shipping format: __4.5 kg box of organic winter veggie box__ * Round pumpkin (approx. 0.8 kg): pumpkin native to this area; round and a vibrant orange colour; sweet flavour like a mix between melon and cucumber; firm texture; can be eaten raw or cooked; ideal for roasting or pureeing * Kohlrabi (approx. 0.8 kg): spherical bulb shape; skin that can vary from light green to violet, although usually with yellow flesh; edible leaf, even though often discarded; ideal for vegetable broths * Leek (approx. 0.5 kg): elongated plant with three parts: green leaves, stem and a small white bulb; a taste similar to onion or garlic, although less intense; can be used cooked in soups, purees and vichyssoise, and raw in salads * Beetroot (approx. 0.7 kg): spherical bulb with vibrant violet colour both inside and outside; can be used cooked, raw, or for juices mixed with orange and carrot * Cabbage (approx. 0.8 kg): white, green, yellow or purple cabbage depending on availability; all can be eaten cooked or raw (if you dare!) and have very similar organoleptic characteristics; the cabbage is shipped with leaves so that it is protected and arrives in good condition * Fennel (approx. 0.9 kg): white fleshy leaf pod, which grows close to the ground; sweet and very delicate taste * Organic farming certified by the European Organic Farming label since 2010 * Produce grown using regenerative farming practices * The quantity of each vegetable may vary depending on availability * Harvested on request, shipped without wax or preservative treatments in a cardboard box without plastics * If you keep them in the fridge, they can last up to 7 days in good condition

When will you receive it?

Receive this box in the winter months, from December to February.

Why should you adopt?
Know who, how and where your food is produced. Source your food in a conscious, direct and consistent manner.
Buying without intermediaries allows the producer to obtain better prices. This helps generate better jobs and social standards in rural areas.
When you adopt something, you allow the producer to ensure the sale at a fixed price and to produce on demand. This also avoids wasting food that is grown without being sold.
It supports producers who strive for environmentally friendly packaging and cultivation practices.
