The project

Adopt a kiwi plant from the farm "Valle de Baztán Bidasoa" in Navarra (Spain) and receive your organic kiwis at home. Maite will take care of your adoption and take its picture. You will also be able to download the adoption certificate, and if you wish, plan your visit to the farm. You do not enter into any long-term commitment: once you have received your organic kiwis and enjoyed the experience, you may decide to renew and extend the adoption.

What do you adopt?

You adopt a kiwi plant from our farm in Navarra (Spain). The cultivation here is certified as organic by the European Union since 2017. During the process of adoption you can choose a name which we will use to identify your kiwi plant. We run farms in the Baztan-Bidasoa Valley and their initials are behind our company's name, kiBBi SAT. We grow green Hayward kiwis, whose scientific name is *Actinidia deliciosa*. This is a deciduous climbing plant that grows on support structures, forming beautiful tunnels of vegetation that are bare, covered with leaves, full of flowers or full of fruit depending on the season. Kiwi cultivation in Spain is relatively new, with the first experimental plot established in 1969 in Galicia using plants from France, where farmers were already growing this plant that is native to China but most widely grown in New Zealand. Cultivation then began to expand along the Cantabrian coast (Galicia, Asturias and the Basque Country) and throughout the rest of northern Spain (Navarra, La Rioja, Aragon and Catalonia). And in recent years, kiwis have been planted in the rest of mainland Spain, thanks to the good adaptation of this crop. Our farms have always been organically managed, which is why we decided to certify them under the EU Organic Farming seal, receiving our first certificate in 2014. We're committed to sustainable farming that shuns traditional practices that harm the environment. What's more, we plan our production cycle to prevent waste generation, in the pursuit of a project based on circular economy. Your adoption is 21 years old and its productive life is around 40 years. For as long as you want to keep it and we can continue taking care of it, you can renew your adoption year after year. If your adoption dies, we will replace it with no additional cost assuring the delivery of your harvest from others. Your kiwi plant produces an average of 20kg of organic kiwis each season. You do not have to commit to the consumption of the whole harvest. Each season you may decide what quantity to reserve and pay the maintenance in accordance with that amount. This way you will only pay for what you consume and will be able to sell any remaining harvest to others.

What will you receive?

During harvest season you can progressively receive the quantity of harvest that you reserve at the moment of adoption. You will be able to receive a minimum of 2 boxes, which can be increased up to 4 boxes according to your needs. Shipping format: __5kg box of organic kiwis__ * Hayward: intense green colour, fleshy pulp and a very characteristic flavour, sweet yet slightly sour * Organic farming certified by the European Organic Farming label since 2017 * They are not treated with wax or preservatives * We harvest our kiwis at the optimal point of ripeness, always with a sugar content above 6,5 degrees Brix * One kilo contains between 12 and 14 fruits (the box contains 65 fruits approximately, depending on the size) * It is a climacteric fruit, harvested when it reaches physiological ripeness but continues to evolve after harvesting until it is ready for consumption * Important: The fruits usually arrive hard, keep them at room temperature until they are ready to eat; if you receive an already ripe piece, you can put it in the fridge or eat it straight away * We cannot harvest the kiwifruit gradually, so we store the fruit in cold storage and send it to you little by little

When will you receive it?

We harvest our kiwis at the optimal point of ripeness, when the fruit has exactly the right level of sugar. Afterwards, we store the kiwis in a chamber to send you the harvest from your tree between December and February.

Why should you adopt?
Know who, how and where your food is produced. Source your food in a conscious, direct and consistent manner.
Buying without intermediaries allows the producer to obtain better prices. This helps generate better jobs and social standards in rural areas.
When you adopt something, you allow the producer to ensure the sale at a fixed price and to produce on demand. This also avoids wasting food that is grown without being sold.
It supports producers who strive for environmentally friendly packaging and cultivation practices.
