The project

Adopt 2m² of a tomato field from "Prima Bio" in Rignano Garganico (Italy) and receive your organic nickel-tested tomatoes at home. Maria Luisa will take care of your adoption and take its picture. You will also be able to download the adoption certificate, and if you wish, plan your visit to the farm. You do not enter into any long-term commitment: Although your adoption will be renewed automatically, you will always be informed in advance and may decide to cancel your adoption at any time as long as the preparation has not yet begun.

What do you adopt?

You adopt 2m² of a tomato field from our farm in Rignano Garganico (Italy). The cultivation here is certified as organic by the European Union as of 1999. In your adopted tomato field, there are 10 tomato plants of the Hienz variety. This is a new variety used for the production of tomatoes for processing. We use this variety of tomato for the characteristics of the skin and pulp. The slightly acidic taste and thick sauce they produce have made them world-famous as sauce tomatoes, but they are also excellent for fresh consumption. In this variety, it is essential to remove the lateral buds. This process is called "sprouting" and is necessary to ensure the appropriate balance in the plant between the vegetative part and the amount of fruit produced. There is also a dwarf version of the Hienz variety, with a smaller plant, which does not require a stake for support. Our tomatoes, 100% organic, are also tested for nickel. Nickel is a naturally occurring heavy metal, found primarily in soil, and all growing plants accumulate small traces of it in vegetation and fruit depending on soil concentrations. The tomato is one of the crops with the highest concentration (weight/weight) of nickel in the fruit, which is why people with nickel sensitivity are advised to be careful when consuming this fruit. The same suggestion does not apply to those who have not developed this allergy, as these are still very small concentrations that are not harmful to our bodies. Our tomatoes are hand-picked and analysed in the laboratory, batch by batch, to continuously ensure that the tomatoes have nickel levels ≤ 0.03 mg/kg. There are several factors that make our organic and nickel-free tomatoes unique: WATER: the water used, from karst aquifers, is pure by its nature and free of heavy metals AIR: our land is located in an area free of air pollution due to low industrial density and low population density ORGANIC: 20 years of organic farming has prevented and continues to prevent the release of NICKEL-containing chemicals into the soil SOIL: it is a medium-textured, partly rocky soil with very low amounts of NICKEL in its composition. Unlike most nickel-free tomatoes that are grown in hydroponics, we have been able to achieve the same result, but through cultivation in the open field. This has been possible thanks to the experience we have built up over the years, including the many tests we carried out until we found the right solution. By growing tomatoes in the field, instead of hydroponics, we reduce the consumption of water and light, but also the use of pesticides. This is because the soil protects the roots against sudden temperature fluctuations and reduces attacks by harmful insects and fungi. With this package, you are supporting an organic, eco-sustainable and ethical supply chain. In fact, Prima Bio is a company of innovation in tradition, combining awareness and daily participation in the entire agricultural process, always with the utmost respect for the environment. We sow, cultivate and process all our products in our certified organic facility, just a few kilometres from the production area. Your tomato field produces an average of 4.5kg of organic nickel-tested tomatoes each season. You do not have to commit to ordering the entire harvest though. Each season you can decide how much you want to reserve, and you pay the maintenance cost according to that amount. This way you only pay for what you plan to consume, and we can offer any surplus harvest to others.

What will you receive?

You can reserve between 0 and 0 boxes for the season, and then plan the deliveries for any of the delivery dates available in the shipment calendar. Shipping format: __1,5 kg box of organic nickel-tested tomatoes__ * Hienz: fragrant, bright red with a slightly acidic taste; you can use it in a salad, to season cold summer pasta or rice dishes, to make fresh sauces or as a side dish for fish and meat dishes * Nickel-free tomato (concentration ≤ 0.03 mg/kg) produced in the open field; you can find the exact concentration in "Additional analysis" * Organic farming certified by the European Organic Farming label since 1998 * Harvest on request, shipped without wax or preservative treatments in a cardboard box without plastics * One kilo contains between 12 and 15 fruits (the box contains between 18 and 23 fruits depending on the size) * If you keep them in the fridge, they can last up to 7 days in good condition

When will you receive it?

The tomatoes start to ripen from the end of July, so we will send them between August and September.

Why should you adopt?
Know who, how and where your food is produced. Source your food in a conscious, direct and consistent manner.
Buying without intermediaries allows the producer to obtain better prices. This helps generate better jobs and social standards in rural areas.
When you adopt something, you allow the producer to ensure the sale at a fixed price and to produce on demand. This also avoids wasting food that is grown without being sold.
It supports producers who strive for environmentally friendly packaging and cultivation practices.
