The project

Adopt an orange tree from the farm "Oroverde" in Lentini (Italy) and receive your organic blood oranges at home. Chiara will take care of your adoption and take its picture. You will also be able to download the adoption certificate, and if you wish, plan your visit to the farm. You do not enter into any long-term commitment: once you have received your organic blood oranges and enjoyed the experience, you may decide to renew and extend the adoption.

What do you adopt?

You adopt an orange tree from our farm in Lentini (Italy). The cultivation here is certified as organic by the European Union since 2014. During the process of adoption you can choose a name which we will use to identify your orange tree. Ours is a family business, passed down from grandparents to grandchildren who now run the business. We are located in Sicily and most of our trees produce red-pulp oranges, a unique characteristic of our area, from completely organic cultivation. Moro oranges are among the most typical and well-known varieties of the island, as they originate from Sicily. The Moro orange is a citrus of Asian origin that was introduced to Sicily during the period of Arab domination from the 9th century A.D., initially mainly for ornamental purposes (in gardens) and only from the 16th century for food purposes. It is an upright, vigorous evergreen tree with lance-shaped, dark green leaves. It flowers in spring, producing clusters of highly fragrant white flowers, while the fruits ripen at the end of February and March. It prefers sunny areas but also grows in areas of partial shade. Among the various types of Sicilian blood oranges, we find the "Moro" variety, which derives from a natural mutation by budding of the "Sanguinello" variety. This natural mutation gives the fruit a higher anthocyanin content, which results in the typical blood-red colour of its juice. Our Moro oranges are grown exclusively under a strict regime in order to be certified as Organic Farming. This goes hand in hand with our philosophy of protecting and maintaining a healthy and clean natural environment without the use of pesticides or other synthetic plant protection products. This guarantees a natural fruit that can be safely consumed. Your adoption is 31 years old and its productive life is around 50 years. For as long as you want to keep it and we can continue taking care of it, you can renew your adoption year after year. If your adoption dies, we will replace it with no additional cost assuring the delivery of your harvest from others. Each orange tree bears an average of 70kg per season. You can decide how many kilos you would like to reserve from your tree and pay the maintenance costs based on the chosen quantity. This helps the Farmer to plan and sell the remaining harvest amount from your tree to others.

What will you receive?

During harvest season you can progressively receive the quantity of harvest that you reserve at the moment of adoption. You will be able to receive a minimum of 2 boxes, which can be increased up to 7 boxes according to your needs. Shipping format: __10kg box of organic blood oranges__ * Moro (January-February): red oranges par excellence, they have a slightly wrinkled skin with red veins, red pulp and a sweet taste, without losing the acid touch of citrus fruits * Organic farming certified by the European Organic Farming label since 2014 * Harvest on request, shipped without wax or preservative treatments in a cardboard box without plastics * We do not store the fruit in cold chambers, they go directly from the tree to your doorstep * Our trees are not a screw factory: each fruit is unique in appearance and size * One kilo contains between 5 and 8 fruits (the box contains between 50 and 80 fruits depending on the size) * The box includes some extra fruits, in case some of them arrive damaged * If you keep them in a fresh and airy place, they can last 3 weeks in good condition (if you want them to last longer, you can keep them in the fridge) Within the box you will find various sizes of oranges. The smaller fruits are suitable for juices or for the preparation of jams while the larger ones are excellent to eat right away. Being an organic product, the peel can be used to aromatize salty and sweet dishes, it is also possible to dry or use for candied fruit.

When will you receive it?

The Moro variety matures from January and we will send it between January and March.

Why should you adopt?
Know who, how and where your food is produced. Source your food in a conscious, direct and consistent manner.
Buying without intermediaries allows the producer to obtain better prices. This helps generate better jobs and social standards in rural areas.
When you adopt something, you allow the producer to ensure the sale at a fixed price and to produce on demand. This also avoids wasting food that is grown without being sold.
It supports producers who strive for environmentally friendly packaging and cultivation practices.
