The project

Adopt an apple tree from the "Obsthof Rönn" farm in Meckenheim (Germany) and receive your Bioland organic “snack” apples at home. Michael will take care of your adoption and take its picture. You will also be able to download the adoption certificate, and if you wish, plan your visit to the farm. You do not enter into any long-term commitment: Although your adoption will be renewed automatically, you will always be informed in advance and may decide to cancel your adoption at any time as long as the preparation has not yet begun.

What do you adopt?

You adopt an apple tree from our farm in Meckenheim (Germany). The cultivation here has been certified as organic by the European Union since 2019. When placing the adoption you can choose a name which we will use to identify your apple tree. We planted our orchard in 2016 and it's our favourite place for taking a walk. We grow 13 different apple varieties there: Santana, Elstar, Gala, Cox Orange, Boskoop, Sonnenglanz, Wellant, Jonagold, Topaz, Pinova, Braeburn, Natyra and Fuji. These are all different faces of the same fruit: the apple. This small selection of our current apple varieties shows how important the apple has been to us for a long time. How it made its way to Germany is not exactly clear. What is certain is that it set out on its way to us several thousand years ago along human trade routes from Asia (possibly from Kazakhstan). Today's cultivated apple (*Malus domestica*) is a deciduous tree that can grow to a height of 8 - 15m and forms a protruding crown. In winter, it loses its leaves and reawakens from hibernation in spring with shoots of leaves and beautiful apple blossom. It is, by the way, part of the rose family. We keep an eye on our trees all year round. They must be cut back and cared for, pruned and watered when needed. Your adoption is 6 years old and its maximum lifespan is 25 years. For as long as you want to keep your adoption, and we can continue taking care of it, you can renew year after year. If your adoption stops producing for any reason, we will replace it with another, and guarantee you the delivery from the production of other units. Sustainable cultivation is particularly important to us in our work. In 2019, we were even awarded the Ludwig Company Award in the Sustainability category. Your apple tree produces an average of 22.5kg of Bioland organic “snack” apples each season. You do not have to commit to ordering the entire harvest though. Each season you can decide how much you want to reserve, and you pay the maintenance cost according to that amount. This way you only pay for what you plan to consume, and we can offer any surplus harvest to others.

What will you receive?

During the season, you will be able to receive the harvest that you are reserving now: a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 5 boxes. Once you have paid for the adoption, you will be able to plan your shipments from your user account. Shipping format: __4.5 kg of Bioland organic “snack” apples__ * We offer you an assortment of very small (50-60mm diameter) apples of different varieties; we call them snack apples; you will receive different varieties from sour (Topaz) to very sweet (Fuji) and from aromatic (Cox orange) to exotic (Natyra or Sonnenglanz) * For the autumn shipping dates in September, October and November, you'll get varieties like Gala, Elstar, Cox Orange, Boskoop, Santana, Pinova and Wellant * From December to March we send Braeburn, Topaz, Jonagold, Natyra, Fuji, Sonnenglanz and Pinova, as well as furthermore Gala in your package * You can download more detailed variety descriptions and a rough harvest calendar under "Additional analyses" * These "mini apples" are especially suitable for snacking, for children as a lunchbox snack, but also, for example, for baked apple pie, where whole apples are used * Organic cultivation, certified with the EU organic seal and the Bioland seal since 2019 * Harvested upon order, without waxes and preservatives on the skin, sent in a plastic-free cardboard box * Our trees are not a screw factory: each fruit is unique in size and appearance * A kilo contains between 10-20 fruits (in a box you will find between 45 and 90 pieces depending on the size) * The best place to store is in a cool environment, it is best to store your apples in the fridge, this will keep them fresh and crunchy for about 2-3 weeks, for optimal taste when eaten, they should be served at room temperature * Only put out as much as you can eat in the next two to three days, since our apples ripen quickly at room temperature

When will you receive it?

We harvest our apples from mid-July to mid-November. We pick each variety several times in order to always harvest optimally ripe fruit. The different varieties have different ripening times and storage characteristics. After harvesting, they are stored in our facilities under optimal conditions. Some varieties need a few more weeks in storage, others can be enjoyed directly from the tree, as the taste is already fully mature. Therefore, we can always offer you a new mix of apples from our apple orchard from mid-September until the new year.

Why should you adopt?
Know who, how and where your food is produced. Source your food in a conscious, direct and consistent manner.
Buying without intermediaries allows the producer to obtain better prices. This helps generate better jobs and social standards in rural areas.
When you adopt something, you allow the producer to ensure the sale at a fixed price and to produce on demand. This also avoids wasting food that is grown without being sold.
It supports producers who strive for environmentally friendly packaging and cultivation practices.
