Adopt an apple tree from the "Obsthof Rönn" farm in Meckenheim (Germany) and receive your Bioland organic "Santana" apples at home. Michael will take care of your adoption and take its picture. You will also be able to download the adoption certificate, and if you wish, plan your visit to the farm. You do not enter into any long-term commitment: Although your adoption will be renewed automatically, you will always be informed in advance and may decide to cancel your adoption at any time as long as the preparation has not yet begun.
You adopt an apple tree from our farm in Meckenheim (Germany). The cultivation here has been certified as organic by the European Union since 2019. When placing the adoption you can choose a name which we will use to identify your apple tree. The trees grow in our apple orchard, which we planted in 2016 and which is our favourite place for taking a walk. We grow 13 different apple varieties there, one of them is the Santana. It is not exactly clear how the apple made its way to Germany. What is certain is that it set out on its way to us several thousand years ago along human trade routes from Asia (possibly from Kazakhstan). Today's cultivated apple is a deciduous tree that can grow to a height of 8 - 15m and forms a protruding crown. In winter, it loses its leaves and reawakens from hibernation in spring with shoots of leaves and beautiful apple blossom. It is, by the way, part of the rose family. We keep an eye on our trees all year round. They must be cut back and cared for, pruned and watered when needed. The Santana apple variety has been on the market since 1996 and was bred in the Netherlands in 1978. One of the "parents" of Santana, in other words. one of the starting varieties in breeding, is the Elstar - one of the most popular apples ever in Germany. This means that a very good basis has already been laid for the Santana. The special thing about Santana is that the variety is often well tolerated by apple allergy sufferers due to a high polyphenol content. But be careful! It always depends on the type of allergy, so try it carefully in case of allergy or talk to your doctor first. Your adoption is 6 years old and its maximum lifespan is 25 years. For as long as you want to keep your adoption, and we can continue taking care of it, you can renew year after year. If your adoption stops producing for any reason, we will replace it with another, and guarantee you the delivery from the production of other units. Sustainable cultivation is particularly important to us in our work. In 2019, we were even awarded the Ludwig Company Award in the Sustainability category. Your apple tree produces an average of 22.5kg of Bioland organic "Santana" apples each season. You do not have to commit to ordering the entire harvest though. Each season you can decide how much you want to reserve, and you pay the maintenance cost according to that amount. This way you only pay for what you plan to consume, and we can offer any surplus harvest to others.
During the season, you will be able to receive the harvest that you are reserving now: a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 5 boxes. Once you have paid for the adoption, you will be able to plan your shipments from your user account. Shipping format: __4.5 kg of Bioland organic “Santana” apples__ * Santana: middle sized apple, yellow-green/red colour, tastes slightly sour, very fruity and balanced, with a mild acidity and a medium firm and juicy pulp * Organic cultivation, certified with the EU organic seal and the Bioland seal since 2019 * Contrary to other fruits, apples cannot be harvested gradually and need to be harvested within a short time span when having reached their full maturity; in order to avoid food waste and to ensure farmer’s economic stability, they are first sent fresh from the tree and for the rest of the season kept in cold storage, never longer than the current season (maximum of 12 weeks storage) * Harvested upon order, without waxes and preservatives on the skin, sent in a plastic-free cardboard box * Santana is great for direct consumption - it is aromatic and juicy and therefore also good in cereals or salads, but because of the acidity you can also make great apple jelly or fresh juice from it * Our trees are not a screw factory: each fruit is unique in size and appearance * A kilo contains between 5-7 fruits (in a box you will find between 25 and 30 pieces depending on the size) * The best place to store them is in a cool environment, it is best to store your apples in the fridge, this will keep them fresh and crunchy for about 2-3 weeks; for optimal taste when eaten, they should be served at room temperature * Only put out as much as you can eat in the next two to three days, since our apples ripen quickly at room temperature
When will you receive it?
We harvest our Santana apples from early to late August. We pick the fruit several times in order to always harvest optimally ripe fruits. After that they have to be stored for about 2 weeks to develop their full flavour. Santana is the first so-called storable variety, but compared to other varieties, it can only be stored for a relatively short time. Therefore, you will receive your harvest from the beginning of September to the beginning of December.
