The project

Adopt an avocado tree from the farm "La Reala" in Motril (Spain) and receive your organic early avocados at home. Damián will take care of your adoption and take its picture. You will also be able to download the adoption certificate, and if you wish, plan your visit to the farm. You do not enter into any long-term commitment: once you have received your organic early avocados and enjoyed the experience, you may decide to renew and extend the adoption.

What do you adopt?

You adopt an avocado tree from our farm in Motril (Spain). Cultivation certified organic by the European Union and regulations of the Bio Suisse since 2014. During the process of adoption you can choose a name which we will use to identify your avocado tree. At La Reala, we grow Fuerte and Bacon avocados. The Bacon variety originated in California, while the Fuerte variety is native to Puebla (Mexico). Both are harvested earlier than other avocado varieties, and remain green when they are ripe. The avocado trees on the farm are of different ages, some are around forty years old and others are as young as just five years old. Their height varies depending on their age, and currently some are up to 4 metres tall. The avocado trees are planted on mountainside terraces overlooking the sea, and are drip-irrigated with pure water from the snowmelt of the Sierra Nevada. We harvest of ripeness and they do not pass through cold storage, instead they are sent directly to your home. We started with the organic certification of the farm in 2010 and it now holds the strict Bio Suisse organic certificate, awarded by the largest organic farming association in Switzerland. What's more, the cooperative where we pack the fruit currently holds the GLOBAL G.A.P. and Grasp quality certifications. Our land contains large areas of Mediterranean forest and mountains with abundant flora and wild fauna. There are many sections of pine forest and Mediterranean scrub where you can see foxes, mountain goats, chameleons, or birds of prey. This farm is one of the largest ones associated with a farming cooperative, with which we market our agricultural products. The fruit you'll receive will come mainly from this farm, but we also rely on other members of the cooperative. We all grow under the same quality parameters controlled by the cooperative's technicians. Together we're stronger and provide better service. My father was a founding partner of the cooperative and our avocados have helped us to receive the following awards: * Innovative Initiative Award, granted by the Andalusian Federation of Cooperatives * First Prize for Corporate Social Responsibility, awarded by the Ministry of Employment and Social Affairs * Generosity Award, granted by the Granada Food Bank Foundation * Ecovalia Andrés Nuñez de Prado Award for the Promotion and Research of Organic Production Your adoption is 20 years old and its productive life is 60 years. For as long as you want to keep your adoption, and we can continue taking care of it, you can renew year after year. If your adoption stops being able to produce for any reason, we will replace it with an other, and we guarantee your delivery from the produce of others for that season. Your avocado tree produces an average of 20kg of organic early avocados each season. You do not have to commit to ordering the entire harvest though. Each season you can decide how much you want to reserve, and you pay the maintenance cost according to that amount. This way you only pay for what you plan to consume, and we can offer any surplus harvest to others.

What will you receive?

You can reserve between 2 and 5 boxes for the season, and then progressively plan the delivery of your boxes for any of the delivery dates available in the shipment calendar. Shipping format: __4kg box of organic avocados__ * Bacon (October-November): round, medium-large with smooth skin of dark green color and darkens a little more as it matures, less fat than other varieties, very suitable for making guacamole * Fuerte (October - February): pear-shaped, medium-large size, smooth and thin skin, green colour when ripe with small whitish spots, less fat, very suitable for making guacamole * Organic farming certified by the Bio Suisse standard and the EU organic label since 2014 * Picked the day before shipment at their optimal point of ripeness and shipped in a cardboard box without plastics * Our avocado trees are not a screw factory: each fruit is unique in appearance and size * One kilo contains between 6 and 8 fruits (the box contains between 24 and 32 fruits depending on the size) * It is a climacteric fruit, harvested when it reaches physiological ripeness but continues to evolve after harvesting until it is ready for consumption * Important: The fruits usually arrive hard, keep them at room temperature until they reach they are ready to eat; if you receive an alread ripe piece, you can put it in the fridge or eat it straight away You can eat them when they start to become soft to the touch. These varieties will still have green skin when ripe. As their skin is thin, they may wrinkle slightly due to dehydration, but this should not affect the quality of the flesh. The ripening speed is accelerated by the temperature, so in warmer areas or periods it may ripen faster. To eat, slice in half and remove the pulp with the help of a spoon. If you want to keep an already sliced half in the best conditions, add olive oil or lemon juice to reduce browning, store in the fridge and use as soon as possible.

When will you receive it?

The smooth-skin avocado (Bacon and Fuerte) ripens earlier and we will be able to start harvesting in October, extending its season until December. At this time the avocado has already gained enough fat to have a creamy and smooth pulp full of flavour.
