What do you adopt?
One square metre of the Rías Gallegas is about 2.5 kg of fresh algae, which once dehydrated is 240 grams. Our seaweed is hand-picked in the Galician estuaries, washed, dehydrated and packaged by us by hand in biodegradable containers. The harvest is done either on foot or by diving at shallow depth and with the help of a boat. The seaweed is cut leaving the rhizoid (root) so that it can continue to grow and bear leaves in their period of growth. From all the spots (population) we can find there is always a part left intact so as not to damage the whole spot. Once cut, an area is left to rest for a few weeks until it has grown and so on. This way, we ensure are sustainable growth of the algae. We will also provide you with 6 different recipes so that you can make the most of them. You will find these recipes on the back of each package, as well as on the web in the form of video recipes in Spanish and English. Organic farming. In the seals section you can download the current certificate. We also have the V-Label certificate and proof that our drying is done at less than 40º C.

Both Elena and I fell in love with the sea since we were little, this made us want to dedicate our lives to the preservation and sustainable development of marine and fishing resources. Our trajectory has always been linked to food quality and aquaculture from an environmental, social and economic sustainability perspective. We have worked in both public and private companies, including the university, where, in addition to studying, we investigate issues related to marine reserves and their fisheries management. After living and diving all over the seas, from the Canary Islands, the Azores, to the marvellous Great Barrier Reef, we decided to go for our Spanish coasts undertaking a unique adventure with seaweed. Our interest in healthy living and healthy eating, as well as our taste for new flavours, led us to take an interest in algae. In Algas La Patrona we enjoy each step of the value chain, we love to get into the sea to select the best specimens and the best areas for harvesting, we supervise the entire process, we do the washing, dehydrating and final packaging in compostable containers, so each day is different from the previous one. We have always been fascinated by seaweed because of its great potential for use in practically all sectors and industries, from mitigating climate change to moving airplanes.

"We have only been in business for 1 year and in this project we are bringing together all our experience, desire, enthusiasm, experiences, energy to transmit our passion for our work and for these sea vegetables that contribute so much to our well-being. We want to bring this product directly to families, offering all the flavour of the sea, a quality product and a much more personal service.”

We call ourselves Algas La Patrona (The Patroness Algae) because as women who love the sea, we wanted to empower women who work at sea. We are in Cambados, a beautiful village located in the estuary of Arousa, surrounded by beaches, white sandy coves, and natural cliffs from which you can see how algae grow. In addition, you can enjoy green forests, rivers and traditional constructions such as mills, granaries and farmhouses. The Rías Baixas are known all over the world because they produce not only our sea vegetables, but also the best fish and seafood. Here, expert divers select the best examples of each species and collect them in a way that ensures the growth of future algae.
