The project

Adopt an avocado tree from the farm "La Gitanilla" in Vélez-Málaga (Spain) and receive your organic mini avocados at home. Nazaret will take care of your adoption and take its picture. You will also be able to download the adoption certificate, and if you wish, plan your visit to the farm. You do not enter into any long-term commitment: once you have received your organic mini avocados and enjoyed the experience, you may decide to renew and extend the adoption.

What do you adopt?

You adopt an avocado tree from our farm in Vélez-Málaga (Spain). The cultivation here is certified as organic by the European Union since 2009. When placing the adoption you can choose a name which we will use to identify your avocado tree. The avocados from our farm are mostly of the Hass and Reed varieties. We also grow the Bacon variety, but to a lesser extent, and with the main purpose of contributing to pollination, as avocado flowers are monoecious and open their petals at different times of the day. By having different varieties, we can make sure that male and female flowers coincide and encourage cross-pollination. The Hass is the predominant variety in all markets today thanks to its qualities. Its harvest period is very long, which means that the farmer can manage harvesting campaigns optimally. What's more, it adapts well to the Mediterranean climate, so the plant develops normally and is fairly productive with the appropriate cultivation practices. Finding this optimal point is more difficult with green skin varieties, such as the Reed, as there isn't such an obvious difference to the eye. These varieties have a slightly different hue when the fruit ripens, but this is difficult to notice. Our avocados are grown according to Organic Farming standards on our own farms where we make sure that all processes are in line with the desired sustainability when it comes to water consumption, electricity use, organic inputs, etc. Our family specialises in this crop and we advise other farmers who want to implement organic farming on their farms. We have the experience of a lifetime dedicated to avocado growing. Your adoption is 15 years old and its productive life is 45 years. For as long as you want to keep your adoption, and we can continue taking care of it, you can renew year after year. If your adoption stops being able to produce for any reason, we will replace it with an other, and we guarantee your delivery from the produce of others for that season. Your avocado tree produces an average of 20kg of organic mini avocados each season. You do not have to commit to ordering the entire harvest though. Each season you can decide how much you want to reserve, and you pay the maintenance cost according to that amount. This way you only pay for what you plan to consume, and we can offer any surplus harvest to others.

What will you receive?

During harvest season you can progressively receive the quantity of harvest that you reserve on the moment of adoption. Shipping format:__ 2,5kg box of organic mini avocados__ * Hass avocado: pear-shaped, dark green skin that turns black when ripe, yellowish pulp with a nutty flavour, very creamy texture, small stone * Organic farming certified by the European Organic Farming label since 2009 * Picked the day before shipment at their optimal point of ripeness and shipped in a cardboard box without plastics * Our farm is not a screw factory: each fruit is unique in appearance and size * One kilo contains between 7 and 11 fruits (the box contains between 18 and 28 fruits depending on the size) * It is a climacteric fruit which is harvested when it reaches physiological maturity; after being picked from the tree it then continues to ripen until it has reached its optimum point for consumption * Important note: the fruits usually arrive hard; to ripen them, keep them at room temperature until they are ready to eat; if you receive some fruit that is already ripe, you can either eat it straight away or keep it in the fridge __Our tips for eating your avocados__: If you have a Hass avocado, the best-known variety, you'll see its ripening point when it turns from green to black and, in turn, it feels soft to the touch. And then enjoy!

When will you receive it?

If you've bought avocados in the supermarket, you'll most likely have had a bad experience. Hass avocados usually arrive on the shelves from all over the world, which means that they undergo long journeys and that they weren't ripe enough when picked. As our farms are just a few hours from anywhere in Europe, we only pick our fruit when it's at its right point of ripeness. And this means you enjoy a unique sensation when you eat these delicious avocados. The harvesting season begins in late November and, depending on the weather, can last until May.

Why should you adopt?
Know who, how and where your food is produced. Source your food in a conscious, direct and consistent manner.
Buying without intermediaries allows the producer to obtain better prices. This helps generate better jobs and social standards in rural areas.
When you adopt something, you allow the producer to ensure the sale at a fixed price and to produce on demand. This also avoids wasting food that is grown without being sold.
It supports producers who strive for environmentally friendly packaging and cultivation practices.
