Adopt a pear tree from the "Know Jou Bio" farm in Torrefarrera (Spain) and receive your organic pears at home. Ramón will take care of your adoption and take its picture. You will also be able to download the adoption certificate, and if you wish, plan your visit to the farm. You do not enter into any long-term commitment: Although your adoption will be renewed automatically, you will always be informed in advance and may decide to cancel your adoption at any time as long as the preparation has not yet begun.
You adopt a pear tree from our farm in Torrefarrera (Spain). The cultivation here has been certified as organic by the European Union as of 2015. Our organic pears are grown on the farms of Alpicat, Roselló and Torrefarrera, found on the plateau that links the municipalities of these 3 villages, with wonderful views of the plain and the city of Lleida. The plots are surrounded by forest and a natural water channel from the Pyrenees. The wild pear dates back to sometime between 1,000 and 2,000 BC in Eastern Europe and Western Asia. Once again, the Greeks and Romans were responsible for taking this crop to other areas, with the Romans bringing it here to the Ebro Basin, where our farm is. The pear (*Pyrus communis*) is a tree of the Rosaceae family and requires around 600 mm of water, especially in summer, so we provide drip irrigation when needed. We let the grass grow around our crop during the spring and we mow it in the summer, leaving it as a layer of organic matter and mulch. We control pests throughout the year with biological pest control, pheromone traps and products authorised by the Organic Farming Council. In the winter, we prune the trees and fertilise them with manure from a neighbouring organic livestock farm, making sure that they reach the spring in perfect conditions. The conference pear is said to have been discovered accidentally in 1884 by a British farmer who came across one in his seedbed. This spontaneous and natural hybridisation of the Leon Leclerc de Laval pear bore such a unique fruit that it won the award for the best fruit at the 1895 National Pear Conference in the UK. It was then known as a conference pear and its cultivation and popularity rapidly spread across many countries. The biodiversity on our farms and in nearby forests encourages a fantastic ecosystem teeming with beneficial insects that help us to naturally control potential pests and diseases. Water from the Pyrenees helps our trees to be healthy and produce top quality fruit, but, as it is a scarce commodity, we optimise its use by using drip irrigation. We have ponds to gather rainwater, which provide shelter for a wide variety of native fauna. Your adoption is 11 years old and its maximum lifespan is 65 years. For as long as you want to keep your adoption, and we can continue taking care of it, you can renew year after year. If your adoption stops producing for any reason, we will replace it with another, and guarantee you the delivery from the production of other units. Your pear tree produces an average of 25kg of organic pears each season. You do not have to commit to ordering the entire harvest though. Each season you can decide how much you want to reserve, and you pay the maintenance cost according to that amount. This way you only pay for what you plan to consume, and we can offer any surplus harvest to others.
During the season, you will be able to receive the harvest that you are reserving now: a minimum of 3 and a maximum of 10 boxes. Once you have paid for the adoption, you will be able to plan your shipments from your user account. Shipping format: __2,5kg box of organic pears __ * Conference (August - November): pear-shape and medium-large size; light green with brown and yellowish nuances; very aromatic fruit; high level of sweetness and low acidity; very juicy * Organic farming certified by the European Organic Farming label since 2015 * One kilo contains between 6 and 11 fruits * Perfect for eating on its own or in sweet or savoury dishes * The fruits are harvested when having reached their full maturity, as they cannot be harvested gradually though, we store the fruit in cold storage and send it to you little by little * If you keep them in a fresh and airy place, they can last up to 5 days in good condition (if you want them to last longer, you can keep them in the fridge)
When will you receive it?
We collect our pears from late July to September. As this fruit can't be harvested progressively, we store the pears in cold rooms and sell them gradually.
