The project

Adopt a nectarine tree from the "Know Jou Bio" farm in Torrefarrera (Spain) and receive your organic nectarines at home. Ramón will take care of your adoption and take its picture. You will also be able to download the adoption certificate, and if you wish, plan your visit to the farm. You do not enter into any long-term commitment: Although your adoption will be renewed automatically, you will always be informed in advance and may decide to cancel your adoption at any time as long as the preparation has not yet begun.

What do you adopt?

You adopt a nectarine tree from our farm in Torrefarrera (Spain). The cultivation here is certified as organic by the European Union as of 2015. Our organic nectarines are grown on the farms of Alpicat, Roselló and Torrefarrera, found on the plateau that links the municipalities of these 3 villages, with wonderful views of the plain and the city of Lleida. The plots are surrounded by forest and a natural water channel from the Pyrenees. From these two fundamental pillars, KnowJou carries out certified organic farming. The biodiversity on our farms and in nearby forests encourages a fantastic ecosystem teeming with beneficial insects that help us to naturally control potential pests and diseases. Water from the Pyrenees helps our trees to be healthy and produce top quality fruit, but, as it is a scarce commodity, we optimise its use by using drip irrigation. We have ponds to gather rainwater, which provide shelter for a wide variety of native fauna. You have probably noticed that peaches, apricots, nectarines, plums, and flat peaches, are very similar fruits, and this is no coincidence, this is because they all belong to the *prunus* genus, and at KnowJou, we can say that we are specialists in cultivating some of these fruits, and always in accordance with European organic standards. Among the great variety of fruit trees brought to the Iberian Peninsula by the Romans is the peach tree. This tree underwent a natural and spontaneous genetic transformation in the 16th century and lost the gene that provides the fuzz on its skin, resulting in the nectarine. There are people who explain it simply by saying that the nectarine is the alopecic sister of the peach. This tree can reach up to 6 metres in height, but we limit its growth by pruning it so that we can work more comfortably and produce fruit of the highest quality. It is a deciduous tree, which is left completely bare in winter and flowers in spring before its leaves are in bud. The flowering leaves us with spectacular landscapes that flood the fields of our region with pink and white flowers. We grow the white (931) and yellow flesh (Big Top) varieties. As each variety is different, they yield their fruit in a staggered and consecutive manner, so that we can harvest the fruit at its optimum point. Growing different varieties also allows us to organise our work better and to offer delicious fruit for a longer period of time, which also makes it easier to market and dramatically reduces food waste. Your adoption is 7 years old and its maximum lifespan is 12 years. For as long as you want to keep your adoption, and we can continue taking care of it, you can renew year after year. If your adoption stops producing for any reason, we will replace it with another, and guarantee you the delivery from the production of other units. Your nectarine tree produces an average of 25kg of organic nectarines each season. You do not have to commit to ordering the entire harvest though. Each season you can decide how much you want to reserve, and you pay the maintenance cost according to that amount. This way you only pay for what you plan to consume, and we can offer any surplus harvest to others.

What will you receive?

You can reserve between 3 and 10 boxes for the season, and then plan the deliveries for any of the delivery dates available in the shipment calendar. Shipping format: 2,5kg box of __organic nectarines__ * Big top, Necta diva and honey gloo: Red-skinned nectarines with yellow flesh * R22 and 831: Nectarines with red skin and white flesh * Regardless of the colour of the flesh, all our varieties have similar organoleptic qualities, with an intense sweetness, aroma and freshness, with a touch of acidity that varies according to the degree of ripening * Organic farming certified by the European Organic Farming label since 2015 * Harvested on request, shipped without wax or preservative treatments in a cardboard box without plastics * The box includes some extra fruits, in case some of them arrive damaged * One kilo contains between 6 and 11 fruits (the box contains between 12 and 20 fruits depending on the size) * We pick the nectarines at the perfect moment of ripeness to minimise damage during the journey and above all, to ensure that they arrive at your home with the best flavour * Store them in the fridge as soon as you receive them, taking out those that you are going to consume in the short term, best consumed within around 7 days of receiving them

When will you receive it?

Our nectarines are harvested daily, picking those that are at their prime. Dates may vary slightly depending on the season and weather conditions, usually starting in July and ending in September

Why should you adopt?
Know who, how and where your food is produced. Source your food in a conscious, direct and consistent manner.
Buying without intermediaries allows the producer to obtain better prices. This helps generate better jobs and social standards in rural areas.
When you adopt something, you allow the producer to ensure the sale at a fixed price and to produce on demand. This also avoids wasting food that is grown without being sold.
It supports producers who strive for environmentally friendly packaging and cultivation practices.
