Sergio Muñoz
From early on, Sergio helped his father cultivate oranges. His romance with agriculture and especially with the cultivation of oranges has ever since outlasted a couple of ups and downs.
When he was still a boy, he loved to join his father in checking the irrigation hoses and climbing the tractor. Later came a time when he preferred to go out with his friends and escaped working the fields as often as he could. His father didn’t pressure him, but always liked to point out that without work and effort there is no reward, no fruit. Slowly but surely Sergio started to enjoy what he was doing and it was him that offered his father to dedicate himself to the fields and earn a living with it. Today, Sergio has become an „alma mater“ of the orange trees planted in Jardín del Gordo.
After some time it became clear to Sergio that if he wanted to make a living off the fields, he would have to not only care about the cultivation but also about finding ways that allow a direct sale of the fruits to the final consumer. For many years his father had to sell his oranges in the traditional market for a price below his expenses for production.
In 2017 Sergio decided to unite with CrowdFarming and began to prepare his finca of orange trees to put them up for adoption.
„Entering CrowdFarming has not only changed our way to cultivate but also our motivation to do our daily work, caring for the oranges trees of „Jardín del Gordo“. Knowing for whom you cultivate and being able to send the oranges when they have reached their best stage is very rewarding.“
Jardín del Gordo
Jardín del Gordo is an orange and clementine plantation situated at the foot of the mountain known as “El Cerro Gordo”, in Valencia. It is located remotely from urban centers, the closest village being Villar del Arzobispo at a distance of around 10 km.
The mountain is a centerpiece of this finca and explains partly the taste of its oranges and clementines. Its Mediterranean vegetation is a source of insects that help to keep harmful pests at bay. On the other hand the mountain helps redirect icy winds in winter nights away to prevent the oranges from freezing, while allowing a good balance between day- and night time temperatures. The difference in temperatures helps the fruit to develop a rich flavour.
Depending on the season, different varieties of citrus fruits are harvested on the plantation of Jardín del Gordo, according to their optimal level of ripeness.
* Between the end of November and beginning of January clementines are harvested for the clementine tree adopters.
For the orange tree adopters:
* During January and parts of February oranges of the variety „Navelina“ are collected.
* From February until the beginning of April the harvest of oranges of the variety „Lane Late“ is planned.
* In April the late orange variety „Navel Powel“ is the last to be collected on the finca.
