Adopt a passion fruit plant from the farm "Huerto Los Montieles" in Cuevas del Almanzora (Spain) and receive your organic passion fruit at home. Javier will take care of your adoption and take its picture. You will also be able to download the adoption certificate, and if you wish, plan your visit to the farm. You do not enter into any long-term commitment: Although your adoption will be renewed automatically, you will always be informed in advance and may decide to cancel your adoption at any time as long as the preparation has not yet begun.
You adopt a passion fruit plant from our farm in Cuevas del Almanzora (Spain). The cultivation here is certified as organic by the European Union as of 2020. The passionfruit plant (*Passiflora edulis*) is a climbing plant native to the tropical part of the American continent. It produces beautiful and unique flowers that have round fruits with a touch of acidity. The Spanish name 'maracuyá' comes from the Guaraní peoples who live in present-day Uruguay, Paraguay and Argentina (in Tupí-Guaraní: 'mburukuja', which means 'fruit of the kuya'). But around the world it is also known as 'the fruit of passion', or passion fruit, a name given to it by the first Spanish Catholics who discovered it in South America, referring to its peculiar flower that reminded them of the passion of Jesus Christ. We grow the red-purple variety, which has low acidity and is the one that best suits our climate. This is a climbing plant that can reach several metres in length and does not live for too long; older plants can live for around eight years. Its dark green-coloured leaves are large and evergreen. We cultivate our fruits organically and in the traditional way, from planting to harvesting. We don't come from a farming family, but we decided to begin our journey into the world of agriculture as an organic operation right from the get-go. Your adoption is 2 years old and its maximum lifespan is 5 years. For as long as you want to keep your adoption, and we can continue taking care of it, you can renew year after year. If your adoption stops producing for any reason, we will replace it with another, and guarantee you the delivery from the production of other units. Your passion fruit plant produces an average of 2kg of organic passion fruit each season. You do not have to commit to ordering the entire harvest though. Each season you can decide how much you want to reserve, and you pay the maintenance cost according to that amount. This way you only pay for what you plan to consume, and we can offer any surplus harvest to others.
You can reserve between 1 and 1 boxes for the season, and then plan the deliveries for any of the delivery dates available in the shipment calendar. Shipping format: 2 kg box of __organic passion fruit__ * *Passiflora Edulis Colvilli *(Red Passion Fruit or Passion Fruit): Round shape, red-purple colour, skin wrinkles as the fruit ripens, sour and very aromatic taste, orange pulp with (edible) seeds * Organic farming certified by the European Organic Farming label since 2020 * We do not keep the fruits in cold storage, they go directly from the tree to your doorstep * The box includes some extra fruits, in case some of them arrive damaged * Our farm is not a screw factory: each fruit is unique in appearance and size * One kilo contains between 18 and 24 fruits (the box contains between 27 and 36 fruits depending on the size) * If you keep them in a fresh and airy place, they can last 2 weeks in good condition (if you want them to last longer, you can keep them in the fridge) It is often said that the uglier the fruit, the better its quality. This is because the fruit wrinkles its skin as it matures. This natural dehydration causes the aromas and pulp to become concentrated, and indicates that it is at the optimal point to be consumed. It can be consumed when it arrives. Don’t be put off by the wrinkles, it will taste better! To extend the fruits’ shelf life, you can store them in the fridge. You can use them in dessert recipes, eat them with yogurt, cocktails, in juices alone or mixed with other fruits. We find the best way is to eat it straight away. Split the fruit in half, grab a spoon and let the explosions of tropical flavours delight your palate.
When will you receive it?
The passion fruit has two seasons a year, one in summer and one in winter. The summer season lasts from July to October and the winter season from December to April. We do not use greenhouses so these forecasts may vary slightly depending on the weather conditions as we adapt to the rhythm of nature.
