The project

Adopt a papaya plant from the farm "Huerto Los Montieles" in Cuevas del Almanzora (Spain) and receive your organic green papayas at home. Javier will take care of your adoption and take its picture. You will also be able to download the adoption certificate, and if you wish, plan your visit to the farm. You do not enter into any long-term commitment: once you have received your organic green papayas and enjoyed the experience, you may decide to renew and extend the adoption.

What do you adopt?

You adopt a papaya plant from our farm in Cuevas del Almanzora (Spain). The cultivation here is certified as organic by the European Union since 2021. During the process of adoption you can choose a name which we will use to identify your papaya plant. The papaya plant (*Carica papaya*) has its roots in America – it looks like a tree, but is considered an evergreen shrub that can reach 3 in height. We grow two very similar varieties, Sweet Sense and Alicia, which are practically indistinguishable. The papaya is a very robust plant, with large, long leaves and a milky sap that can irritate the skin. The fruit is produced attached to the trunk, making a kind of 'belly' around it. There are plants with female, male or hermaphroditic flowers. Those that produce the best fruits are hermaphrodite plants – we send you these fruits. We grow our fruits organically right from the start, when we plant the shrubs, and in the traditional way. We don't come from a farming family, so we decided to start our journey into the world of agriculture as an organic organisation, right from the outset. The papaya is a tropical fruit; to grow it in Europe, it must be protected from winter storms through the use of greenhouses. Without these, the crop would not survive the winter in this area. During the summer months, we open them up to allow the plant to connect with nature. Your adoption is 1 year old and its productive life is around 2 years. For as long as you want to keep it and we can continue taking care of it, you can renew your adoption year after year. If your adoption dies, we will replace it with no additional cost assuring the delivery of your harvest from others. Your papaya plant produces an average of 40kg of organic green papayas each season. You do not have to commit to the consumption of the whole harvest. Each season you may decide what quantity to reserve and pay the maintenance in accordance with that amount. This way you will only pay for what you consume and will be able to sell any remaining harvest to others.

What will you receive?

During harvest season you can progressively receive the quantity of harvest that you reserve at the moment of adoption. Shipping format: __4kg box of organic green papayas __ * Sweet Sense or Alicia (October - June): unripe papayas used for cooking, green on the outside and pale yellow on the inside, elongated shape, mild flavour, firm texture that softens after cooking; reminds of vegetables such as pumpkins * The green papaya is harvested before the fruit reaches its physiological ripeness and is traditionally used in the Asian cuisine in multiple dishes; it is cooked like vegetables or eaten in salads * Organic farming certified by the European Organic Farming label since 2021 * Picked the day before shipment at their optimal point of ripeness and shipped in a cardboard box without plastics * Our trees are not a screw factory: each fruit is unique in appearance and size * One kilo contains between 1 and 2 fruits * If you keep them in a fresh and airy place, they can last 2 weeks in good condition (if you want them to last longer, you can keep them in the fridge) As well as being low in calories, they contain very little protein and fat. What’s more, they're rich in Vitamins A, C and potassium. On top of all this, they also contain papain.

When will you receive it?

Papayas flower and grow during the summer and their harvesting period is from October to June.

Why should you adopt?
Know who, how and where your food is produced. Source your food in a conscious, direct and consistent manner.
Buying without intermediaries allows the producer to obtain better prices. This helps generate better jobs and social standards in rural areas.
When you adopt something, you allow the producer to ensure the sale at a fixed price and to produce on demand. This also avoids wasting food that is grown without being sold.
It supports producers who strive for environmentally friendly packaging and cultivation practices.
