The project

Adopt an orange tree from the farm "Hort de Xerta" in Xerta (Spain) and receive your harvest in the form of late organic oranges at home. The Farmer Joaquín will take care of your adoption and take its picture. Also, you will be able to download the adoption certificate and, if you wish, plan your visit to the farm. You do not enter into any long-term commitment: once you receive your harvest and you enjoyed the experience, you may decide to renew and extend the adoption.

What do you adopt?
Adopt an orange tree that we cultivate under the Organic Farming regulations of the European Union since 2008. During the process of adoption you can choose a name that we will engrave on a plaque and hang on your tree. These are organic oranges from the Blancas (“White”) variety. In the farm Hort de Xerta we have oranges of the Valencia variety. These oranges are ideal for juice although you can also enjoy them fresh. During the process of adoption you can choose a name that we will engrave on a plaque and hang on your tree. The productive life of an orange tree is around 35-40 years. For as long as you want to keep it and we can continue taking care of it, you can renew your adoption year after year. If your orange tree dies, we will replace it with no additional cost and assuring the delivery of your harvest from others. A orange tree from our farm produces an average of 60 kg each season. You do not have to commit to the consumption of the whole harvest. Each season you may decide what quantity to reserve and pay the maintenance in accordance with the amount you reserve. This way you will only pay for what you consume and we can plan and sell the remaining harvest amount to others.
What will you receive?
During the season you will be receiving the quantity of harvest you reserved in the adoption process. Shipping format: __Boxes of 10kg of oranges__ * Valencia Late, one of the so called “white” oranges * Smaller in size than other oranges of the Navel variety * Round and may contain some seeds * Used both for fresh consumption and for making juices * Harvest period: from March to the end of June * When it gets hot, the fruit on the tree may turn green again, although this does not change its flavour Conservation tip: the oranges can last up to 2-3 weeks if ket in cool and ventilated place, far away from heat and humidity.
When will you receive it?
Please, check the deadline for participating in this project (deadline for adoption) below. As of this date shipments begin. You can plan all the deliveries once you completed the adoption process. The Farmer will collect your harvest on demand and just before shipment so you will receive it fresh, not treated with wax or other preservatives.
Why should you adopt?
* Learn who produces your food, how and where. Receive your food in a conscious manner * Buy directly from the farmer. Help to generate wealth and better jobs in the rural areas * Plan ahead and enable the Farmer to produce on demand. This way we can avoid overproduction and fight food waste * Reward Farmers who make an effort to use environmentally-friendly packaging and cultivation techniques

Joaquín Gine
I am the son and grandson of farmers, our family has always been linked to the countryside, growing vegetables, fruit trees, olives and citrus. But at the moment we only grow organic citrus. We decided to switch to organic farming because we used to do integrated agriculture and we decided to take a step forward and differentiate ourselves with a high quality product, respecting the environment and nutritional health as much as possible. We are the third generation of a family business dedicated to the production of citrus fruits. We produce and pack our fruit in the farm warehouse. Our day-to-day life in the countryside changes depending on the time of year, as the crop has different stages. During the harvest, we are dedicated to harvesting the fruits and selecting the best ones. Depending on the ripeness of the fruit, we pick it or wait a few days, in order for it to arrive at its destination with the maximum quality. As the harvesting period is long due to the different varieties we cultivate, we also have to do the maintenance of the farms during this time: cutting herbs, checking irrigation, providing the manure, pruning, replanting a tree ... With all this work we are a group of 7 people and sometimes get help when there is more to do. Normally there are some who are dedicated to harvesting the fruit and others do various tasks. We use the time, when the trees are still wet in the mornings because of the dew to complete other daily maintenance tasks, since the citrus fruits with dew water cannot be harvested because they would spoil faster. I personally take care of controlling the whole process of filling the boxes so that the fruit reaches our customers' homes as well as possible. My parents also provide me with a great deal of support with their experience of so many years working as farmers. The job of a farmer is a continuous experience that we gain day by day. I have always dedicated myself to agriculture because it motivates me and it satisfies me to see, on a day to day basis, how every plant that we take care of evolves until it yields the expected fruit in order to be able to deliver it to our customers. We are currently looking forward to joining CrowdFarming, so that we can deliver our organic citrus directly to you.

"I am a professional farmer and together with my family we have different farms located in our region: El Baix Ebre, located in the south of Catalonia. There we have different varieties of mandarins and oranges, so that our customers can enjoy our citrus fruits for as long as possible, starting at the end of October and ending at the end of June depending on each season. The future as a farmer I see in being able to deliver our products directly with the highest quality."

Hort de Xerta
Hort de Xerta
We have named the farm Hort de Xerta, because it is one of the various fields that we have and belongs to the municipality of Xerta. It is located on the right bank of the river Ebro, bordering it with a perimeter of lush and wild vegetation typical of the riverside forest. Through the center of the farm passes the irrigation channel that carries the water to the rice fields of the Ebro delta. It is also bordered by a ravine called "Xivelli" with a sugar cane vegetation that at the same time provides a natural protective barrier to prevent pollution from other non-organic crops. There are about 6 hectares of citrus of different varieties on the farm. The soil is a sandy-clay that has been deposited by the river at different times of flooding, so it is a very fertile soil. On the property we also find our restored country house of 480 m2 with a vine over 100 years old at the entrance, under whose shade you can have a chat, a good meal etc ... and you can also enjoy a good summer bath in the pool located opposite it. The farms we have are located within the Terres de l'Ebre Biosphere Reserve and at the same time we are surrounded by two natural parks of "Ports de Tortosa" and "Delta de l'Ebre".
