The project

Adopt a mandarin tree from the farm "Hort de Bitem" in Bitem (Spain) and receive your harvest in the form of organic juice mandarins at home. Joaquín will take care of your adoption and take its picture. You will also be able to download the adoption certificate, and if you wish, plan your visit to the farm. You do not enter into any long-term commitment: Although your adoption will be renewed automatically, you will always be informed in advance and may decide to cancel your adoption at any time as long as the preparation has not yet begun.

What do you adopt?

Adopt a mandarin tree that we cultivate under the Organic Farming regulations of the European Union since 2008. The Ortanique variety comes from Jamaica, with its name being a combination of OR (orange), TAN (tangerine) and IQUE (unique). This means that it's a hybrid between a mandarin and orange, giving it a unique and truly special flavour. It has a high content of orange-coloured juice. The tree is robust with thorny branches, while the fruits are medium to large in size with a flattened shape. We're a family of farmers in the Baix Ebre region (Tortosa), a little further inland from the Delta del Ebro. For several generations, we've been growing crops on the land irrigated by water from the River Ebro plain. The citrus fruits from our area have a good reputation because they're grown in a mild climate. In 2008, we made the decision to continue growing orange and mandarin trees but in a different way, just as our grandparents did, i.e. without synthetic pesticides or chemical fertilisers. As a result, we became certified in organic farming. I think we made the right decision because cultivating our fields in this way is favourable for us, the environment and, of course, the consumer. This makes us feel hugely satisfied. The productive life of a mandarin tree is around 40 years. For as long as you want to keep it and we can continue taking care of it, you can renew your adoption year after year. If your mandarin tree dies, we will replace it with no additional cost and assuring the delivery of your harvest from others. Each mandarin tree bears an average of 25kg per season.

What will you receive?

During harvest season you can progressively receive the quantity of harvest that you reserve on the moment of adoption. You will be able to receive a minimum of 4 boxes, which can be increased up to 10 boxes according to your needs. Shipping format: __box with 5kg of Ortanique mandarins__ * These medium-sized mandarins have a sweet taste, a flattened shape and a high juice content * You can peel them to eat fresh, but we recommend using a knife as their skin is very thick * We grow them in a very windy area, so some of them may be blemished due to rubbing against the branches. * Organic farming certified by the European Organic Farming label since 2008 * Picked the day before shipment at their optimal point of ripeness and shipped in a cardboard box without plastics * Our trees are not a screw factory: each fruit is unique in appearance and size * One kilo contains between 6 and 10 fruits * If you keep them in a fresh and airy place, they can last 2 weeks in good condition (if you want them to last longer, you can keep them in the fridge)

When will you receive it?

The harvesting season of this variety begins in mid-February and ends between mid-March and early April, depending on the year.

Why should you adopt?
Know who, how and where your food is produced. Source your food in a conscious, direct and consistent manner.
Buying without intermediaries allows the producer to obtain better prices. This helps generate better jobs and social standards in rural areas.
When you adopt something, you allow the producer to ensure the sale at a fixed price and to produce on demand. This also avoids wasting food that is grown without being sold.
It supports producers who strive for environmentally friendly packaging and cultivation practices.
