What do you adopt?
Adopt an apple tree that we cultivate based on the Organic Farming and Demter regulations of the European Union. During the process of adoption you can choose a name we use to identify your apple tree. Our range includes old traditional varieties such as Crown Prince Rudolf, Gravensteiner, Gelber Spitzler, Bohnapfel, Marienapfel, Arlet, Jonagold, Idared, Gala, Golden Delicious and newer varieties such as Santana, Crimson Crisp, Pinova, Natyra and Topaz. The flavours of our apples range from sourish, sweet-sour to sweet with little acidity and the consistency of the "fruit flesh" ranges from crisp to soft and also from juicy-spicy to fine and spicy - there is much to discover. The productive life of an apple tree is around 30 - 40 years. For as long as you want to keep it and we can continue taking care of it, you can renew your adoption year after year. If your apple tree dies, we will replace it with no additional cost and assuring the delivery of your harvest from other trees. A apple tree from our farm produces an average of 30 kg each season. You do not have to commit to the consumption of the whole harvest. Each season you may decide what quantity to reserve and pay the maintenance in accordance with the amount you reserve. This way you will only pay for what you consume and we can plan and sell the remaining harvest amount from you tree to others.
What will you receive?
During harvest season you can progressively receive the quantity of harvest that you reserve on the moment of adoption. Shipping format: __box of 6kg demeter table apples__ * Red, golden, orange-coloured... apples of different sizes * No pesticides, no waxes and no post-harvest skin preservation treatments (skin can be used) * For eating, baking or preserving. * Seasonal: harvested on demand * Beautiful and imperfect. We do not throw away an apple just because it has a spot or a small discoloration on the skin. What counts is the taste! * Average quantity per kilo: between 4 and 6 pieces Optimal storage: a cool and airy place, ideal at 5 to 10°C. Here the apples last 2 to 3 weeks. Our regional conditions are ideal for the cultivation of fruits, especially apples. This is partly due to the balanced climate with sufficient rainfall and warmth in summer. However, the cool autumn nights before the harvest ensure a refreshing and crisp acid-sugar ratio and give the apples a picturesque mix of dark red, orange, yellow and green colours, depending on the variety. The apples remain on the tree until they are optimally ripe and are immediately processed for their shipment after harvesting. To ensure that our apples arrive from the tree to your home as fresh a s possible and without any suffrage, we put a lot of efforts in our packaging. The apples will travel well-protected in several layers of recycable paper in a recycable cardboard box. Would you also like to try something new? We also produce [Demeter quince juice](http://www.crowdfarming.com/en/farmer/hof-birnstingl-gottinger/up/adopt-a-quince-tree-hof-birnstingl-gottinger) and [Demeter apple juice](http://www.crowdfarming.com/en/farmer/hof-birnstingl-gottinger/up/adopt-an-apple-tree-hof-birnstingl-gottinger), which is great for fruity cocktails.
When will you receive it?
Please, check the deadline for participating in this project (deadline for adoption) below. As of this date shipments begin. You can plan all the deliveries once you completed the adoption process. The harvest period is from September to November, but some varieties only develop their optimal taste after a short storage period, which is why we ship some varieties a little later, thus extending the shipping period from September to December. Please find under "Further analysis" (below) the PDF where with more details about the individual varieties and the estimated harvest period.
Why should you adopt?
* Learn who produces your food, how and where. Receive your food in a conscious manner. * Buy directly from the farmer. Help to generate wealth and better jobs in the rural areas. * Plan ahead and enable the Farmer to produce on demand. This way we can avoid overproduction and fight food waste. * Reward Farmers who make an effort to use environmentally-friendly packaging and cultivation techniques.

My husband Stefan and I run our family business together with a lot of passion, fascination for nature and curiosity for new things. Stefan has already learned how to handle fruit trees on his parents' orchard in the southeast of Austria: How to plant trees, where each variety thrives best and what it takes to grow a tree and harvest tasty fruit. Working with nature and observing it in the different seasons fascinated and motivated me from an early age. I never met my great-grandfather, but what I heard and saw shaped me: his way of designing gardens meant wisdom and beauty to me. I remember my childhood and old big trees, some with two to three pear varieties and a variety of fruits that I can't find anywhere today. Inspired by this, I completed a degree in natural sciences, came to renewable energies and founded a company for sustainable development. Nevertheless, my husband Stefan and I still dedicate ourselves intensively to agriculture and since 2014 we have planted new apple-, quince-, and vineyards, which we not only design agronomically, but also aesthetically and cultivate biologically dynamically in the family business. A healthy soil is the basis for a healthy food to thrive on. A good indicator of food quality is the variety of microorganisms that can be found in and on it. We therefore cooperate closely with research projects that look at new approaches in agriculture. It has recently been discovered that our apples contain a completely different spectrum of microorganisms than conventional apples .

"I never knew my great-grandfather, but what I heard and saw shaped me: his way of designing gardens meant wisdom and beauty to me. Our orchards should appeal to all the senses, which is why we plant flowers, many roses and lavender between the trees and the vines. From an orchard we want to create an oasis of peace."

Our farm Birnstingl Gottinger in the "West Styrian hill country" has already 500 years of history and that can be seen in the ancient sacred figures and the statue of the turkish siege that reminds us of past time. When my family took over the farm about 300 years ago, our family tradition of viticulture and then fruit cultivation began. My great-grandfather Fritz was a botanist, very eager to experiment and plan orchards and an English garden, and we offered our fruit in a refined form in our Buschenschenke, a typical Styrian inn. Since 2003 we have been cultivating our land organically and in 2014 we decided to devote ourselves more intensively to fruit cultivation and planted new trees among the trees, some of which are 70 years old. Since then we have been working biodynamically (Demeter). Small trees stand between large fruit trees, roses and herbs mix in between and bring beauty and variety to our plantations. A lovely fragrance fills our gardens from spring till autumn. Our home, the " West Styrian hill country ", is characterised by a very varied landscape. The resulting very small-scale and diverse agriculture is often associated with a lot of manual work, so much more elaborate than on flat land. Our climate is ideal for cultivating fruit and wine: warm summers and cool autumn nights produce a beautiful red colour and a crisp, fresh aroma of apple and quince and, as a result, a harmonious sugar-acidity ratio in our juices. Only the fully ripened fruits of each variety are picked by hand in two to three harvesting steps and immediately or sent to you or processed into juice in a nearby fruit press to preserve taste and aroma as perfectly as possible. Until the harvest is complete, the juice is stored in a tank and then filled into the CrowdFarming bottles with personalised labels and sent to you. We look forward to welcoming you CrowdFarmers!
