The project

Adopt an orange tree from the farm "Finca Valdivieso" in Utrera (Spain) and receive your harvest in the form of organic oranges at home. José Antonio will take care of your adoption and take its picture. You will also be able to download the adoption certificate, and if you wish, plan your visit to the farm. You do not enter into any long-term commitment: Although your adoption will be renewed automatically, you will always be informed in advance and may decide to cancel your adoption at any time as long as the preparation has not yet begun.

What do you adopt?

Adopt an orange tree that we cultivate under the Organic Farming regulations of the European Union since 2017. During the process of adoption you can choose a name which we will use to identify your orange tree. Finca Valdivieso is a beautiful citrus farm specialised in growing oranges for juicing. The farm is located in the rural town of Utrera, just a few kilometres outside the city of Seville. The climate in the area is particularly good for growing citrus fruits as temperatures are pleasant for most of the year. The main variety grown is the Salustiana Orange, which belongs to the group of Valencia (or white) oranges. These oranges can be eaten whole and are also great for making juices thanks to their low acidity and sweet taste, which is due to the low amount of limonin that they contain. The Salustiana is a sturdy tree, with strong and leafy medium-sized branches, with some even measuring up to three metres. This variety is believed to have spontaneously mutated in Valencia (Spain) in the mid-twentieth century. It's now one of the most widely grown varieties in Spain. Its fruit is ready to harvest between January and April and it's one of the varieties that best withstands the passage of time once picked. The average age of the orange trees is 12-15 years old and they have had the European organic label since 2017. The finca covers 100 hectares and is flat, with a cortijo farmhouse on the land where the manager lives. The productive life of an orange tree is around 90 years. For as long as you want to keep it and we can continue taking care of it, you can renew your adoption year after year. If your orange tree dies, we will replace it with no additional cost and assuring the delivery of your harvest from others. A orange tree from our farm produces an average of 49 kg each season. You do not have to commit to the consumption of the whole harvest. Each season you may decide what quantity to reserve and pay the maintenance in accordance with the amount you reserve. This way you will only pay for what you consume and we can plan and sell the remaining harvest amount to others.

What will you receive?

During the season, you will be able to receive the harvest that you are reserving now: a minimum of 3 and a maximum of 7 boxes. Once you paid for the adoption, you will be able to plan your shipments from your user account. Shipping format: __Box of approximately 7kg of organic oranges__ * Navelina orange (December–January): slightly protruding navel, oval shape, very juicy, easy to peel, balanced flavour between tangy and sweet * Salustiana orange (January–March): round shape, medium size, orange fruits, thin skin, high juice content, perfect balance between tanginess and sweetness * Organic farming certified by the European Organic Farming seal since 2017 * They are not treated with wax or preservatives (you can use the peel) * Harvest on request, shipped without wax or preservative treatments in a cardboard box without plastics * Our trees are not a screw factory: each fruit is unique in appearance and size * One kilo contains between 7 and 9 fruits * In one tree you have everything from small to large fruits, so your oranges will be heterogeneous * If you keep them in a fresh and airy place, they can last 2-3 weeks in good condition (if you want them to last longer, you can keep them in the fridge)

When will you receive it?

The Farmer will collect your harvest on demand and just before shipment so you will receive it fresh, not treated with wax or other preservatives. The Salustiana Orange can be harvested in our area from December onwards. We prefer to start the harvest in early January to ensure the sweet taste and extend it until late April. In this period, our fruits will have the nutritional qualities, flavour and perfect colour to provide CrowdFarmers with the best quality possible.

Why should you adopt?
Know who, how and where your food is produced. Source your food in a conscious, direct and consistent manner.
Buying without intermediaries allows the producer to obtain better prices. This helps generate better jobs and social standards in rural areas.
When you adopt something, you allow the producer to ensure the sale at a fixed price and to produce on demand. This also avoids wasting food that is grown without being sold.
It supports producers who strive for environmentally friendly packaging and cultivation practices.
