Adopt an avocado tree from the farm "Hacienda Altos de Cantarriján" in Almuñecar (Spain) and receive your reed avocados at home. José Antonio will take care of your adoption and take its picture. You will also be able to download the adoption certificate, and if you wish, plan your visit to the farm. You do not enter into any long-term commitment: Although your adoption will be renewed automatically, you will always be informed in advance and may decide to cancel your adoption at any time as long as the preparation has not yet begun.

What do you adopt?

You adopt an avocado tree from our farm in Almuñecar (Spain) that we cultivate following the Organic Farming regulations of the European Union. We are already in the process of converting and expect to be officially certified by 2023. When placing the adoption you can choose a name which we will use to identify your avocado tree. You adopt an avocado tree of the Reed variety, which has a 'penniform' shape, i.e. it resembles a fir tree. Growing to a height of up to three metres, it's a very vigorous and productive tree, but sensitive to the wind, as its fruit can easily fall to the ground. It comes from California and was discovered by James S. Reed in 1948. It's highly valued as it's a very late variety, which means that the avocado season can be extended to the start of summer. As it's a wind-sensitive variety, we grow it on the most wind-protected slopes. Like the rest of the farm, it's being converted to organic farming. Your adoption is 4 years old and its productive life is 70 years. For as long as you want to keep your adoption, and we can continue taking care of it, you can renew year after year. If your adoption stops being able to produce for any reason, we will replace it with an other, and we guarantee your delivery from the produce of others for that season. Your avocado tree produces an average of 14kg of reed avocados each season. You do not have to commit to ordering the entire harvest though. Each season you can decide how much you want to reserve, and you pay the maintenance cost according to that amount. This way you only pay for what you plan to consume, and we can offer any surplus harvest to others.

What will you receive?

You can reserve between 3 and 7 boxes for the season, and then you can plan the delivery of your boxes for any of the delivery dates available in the shipment calendar. Shipping format: __2kg box of avocados__ * Reed: round shape, medium-large size, rough, thick and hard skin, dark green colour when ripe, very pleasant taste and smooth texture, good for spreads and guacamole * Farming in conversion to Organic Farming since 2020 * We do not store fruits in cold chambers, they go directly from the tree to your doorstep * Our farm is not a screw factory: each fruit is unique in appearance and size * One kilo contains between 2 and 4 fruits * It is a climacteric fruit which is harvested when it reaches physiological maturity; after being picked from the tree it then continues to ripen until it has reached its optimum point for consumption * Important note: the fruits usually arrive hard; to ripen them, keep them at room temperature until they are ready to eat; if you receive some fruit that is already ripe, you can either eat it straight away or keep it in the fridge The Reed avocado has a hard skin that doesn't turn green when ripe. You'll know that it's ripe when it gives slightly to the touch all over. A sign that this avocado is ready to eat is that the stone is loose. So, give the fruit a shake like a maracas and you'll hear the stone rattle.

When will you receive it?

This avocado is ready to send from mid-spring to early summer.
