The project

Adopt an avocado tree from the farm "Hacienda Altos de Cantarriján" in Almuñecar (Spain) and receive your organic mini avocados at home. José Antonio will take care of your adoption and take its picture. You will also be able to download the adoption certificate, and if you wish, plan your visit to the farm. You do not enter into any long-term commitment: Although your adoption will be renewed automatically, you will always be informed in advance and may decide to cancel your adoption at any time as long as the preparation has not yet begun.

What do you adopt?

You adopt an avocado tree from our farm in Almuñecar (Spain). The cultivation here is certified as organic by the European Union as of 2022. During the process of adoption you can choose a name which we will use to identify your avocado tree. Our farm is home to several varieties of avocado trees with different ages. This time, you're adopting an avocado tree of the Hass variety, which is the best known across the world. This variety was first grown in California in the 1920s, when Rudolph Hass discovered it in his orchard crossed with the seeds of an avocado variety native to Guatemala. Avocados have been grown on the Costa Tropical in Granada for decades, alongside other tropical fruits such as mangos and custard apples. Some of our trees were planted in the late 1980s and others in 2015. The older trees are up to four metres tall, and some of them have been pruned to re-sprout thicker. The younger ones are barely the height of a person. We've always farmed in an environmentally friendly way and we're currently in the process of securing the organic logo, which we hope to achieve by 2022. I'm still very young, but I've lived in the countryside since I was little, because I come from a family with a long tradition in the farming of subtropical fruits. My grandfather has taught me many things. The Hacienda Altos de Cantarriján is located in an exceptional part of the Mediterranean with an incredible microclimate for avocado farming. It straddles the provinces of Málaga and Granada and is sheltered by the mountains to the north, with views to the Mediterranean in the south. The most typical problem in this area is the strong wind in the winter, which can blow some of the fruit off the trees. That's why we prefer the trees not to grow too tall. Your adoption is 36 years old and its productive life is around 30 years. For as long as you want to keep it and we can continue taking care of it, you can renew your adoption year after year. If your adoption dies, we will replace it with no additional cost assuring the delivery of your harvest from others. Your avocado tree produces an average of 15kg of organic mini avocados each season. You do not have to commit to the consumption of the whole harvest. Each season you may decide what quantity to reserve and pay the maintenance in accordance with that amount. This way you will only pay for what you consume and will be able to sell any remaining harvest to others.

What will you receive?

During the season, you will be able to receive the harvest that you are reserving now: a minimum of 3 and a maximum of 6 boxes. Once you paid for the adoption, you will be able to plan your shipments from your user account. Shipping format: __2,5kg box of organic mini avocados__ * Hass avocado (December - June): pear-shaped, dark green skin that turns black when ripe, yellowish pulp with a nutty flavour, very creamy texture, small stone * Organic farming certified by the European Organic Farming label since 2022 * Picked the day before shipment at their optimal point of ripeness and shipped in a cardboard box without plastics * Our trees are not a screw factory: each fruit is unique in appearance and size * One kilo contains between 8 and 12 fruits * Keep them at room temperature until they are ripe, once they are fully ripe put them in the fridge to keep them longer * It is a climacteric fruit, harvested when it reaches physiological ripeness but continues to evolve after harvesting until it is ready for consumption * Important: The fruits usually arrive hard, keep them at room temperature until they reach they are ready to eat; if you receive an already ripe piece, you can put it in the fridge or eat it straight away The Hass Baby avocado isn't a different avocado, but it just didn't get enough fat due to various reasons such as surplus of fruit on the tree. This fruit is normally discarded at traditional stores as it doesn't meet the minimum size requirements. Besides having an exceptional quality and maintaining the same flesh/stone ratio, the Hass Baby has can also be eaten in one go, instead of having to keep one half in the fridge.

When will you receive it?

In our area, the Hass avocado reaches its optimal point of ripeness in late autumn. We can send out your harvest between mid-November and early spring. The harvest begins when the avocados have acquired the dry matter that defines their characteristic creaminess.

Why should you adopt?
Know who, how and where your food is produced. Source your food in a conscious, direct and consistent manner.
Buying without intermediaries allows the producer to obtain better prices. This helps generate better jobs and social standards in rural areas.
When you adopt something, you allow the producer to ensure the sale at a fixed price and to produce on demand. This also avoids wasting food that is grown without being sold.
It supports producers who strive for environmentally friendly packaging and cultivation practices.
