The project

Adopt a cow of our flock "Gaec Mehaberria" in Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port (France and receive your harvest in the form of matured Tomme cow's milk cheese at home. Jean will take care of your adoption and take its picture. Also, you will be able to download the adoption certificate and, if you wish, plan your visit to the farm. As the production coming from one cow is big, the adoption is shared among various people. If you wish to have a bigger share, you may adopt more than once. You do not enter into any long-term commitment: once you receive your harvest and you enjoyed the experience, you may decide to renew and extend the adoption.

What do you adopt?

Adopt a cow from our farm in Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port (France). We suggest you adopt one of the 11 nice young Prim ’Holstein cows. They are between 3 and 5 years old and produce milk until they are 7-8 years old. The cows feed on a lot of grass from pastures, but when they are inside and more particularly in winter they have a supplementary supply in flax and alfalfa clover and this is how they produce a milk rich in Omega 3 which is guaranteed by the Bleu Blanc Cœur label. In addition, the area occupied by the breeding of the animals and the creation of food for the cows is 50 ha. Ferme Mehaberria is a family farm that was bought by Jean’s parents over 40 years ago. It is a farm that operates in conventional and extensive mode, with control over inputs and maximum food autonomy. Thanks to this diet guaranteed by the Bleu Blanc Cœur label, there is an impact on the release of methane and therefore of global warming : As a general rule, 1 cow produces 600l of methane per day, but a Blue Blanc Cœur cow produces 15 to 20% less (calculated according to a method recognized by the UN). In terms of milk it is 20g of CO² per 1 liter of milk produced by a standard cow and for a BBC cow: 15-16g. We can evaluate in terms of km traveled by a vehicle a gain of 450,000km for a herd of 50 cows! This is how Jean's production saves 315,000km per year compared to conventional farming! In addition, the area occupied by raising animals and creating food is 50 ha. After their productive life they are sold in the meat circuit. The female calves are bred for milk production and the males enter the fattening circuit. Each cow is adopted by 250 CrowdFarmers who receive boxes with 2kg of matured Tomme cow's milk cheese. You do not have to commit to the consumption of the whole harvest. Each season you may decide what quantity to reserve and pay the maintenance in accordance with the amount you reserve. This way you will only pay for what you consume and we can plan and sell the remaining harvest amount from your cow to others.

What will you receive?

During harvest season you can progressively receive the quantity of harvest that you reserve at the moment of adoption. You will be able to receive a minimum of 2 boxes, which can be increased up to 7 boxes according to your needs. __1 x matured Tomme cow's milk cheese (about 2kg, vacuum-packed bag)__ The cheese is made from a 4-kg-Tomme cheese cut in half. It is 17-18cm in diameter and 10-12cm high. The box contains half a cheese weighing about 2kg, made from raw cow's milk and matured in the cellar for about 4 months through manual care by brushing the rind. We have chosen to make the cheese from raw milk, in which the very diverse natural flora give the cheese a rich flavour and offer an exceptional taste. The cheese obtained is a delicate and fragrant soft cheese of the Pyrenean Tomme type. It can be enjoyed at the end of a meal as a cheese platter, but also as an aperitif or in cubes or sticks in salads or prepared in raclette or for preparing burgers. Another important feature of the cheese we produce is that it is made from Bleu Blanc Cœur milk, so that Omega 3 content is guaranteed. Our cheeses can be stored in the refrigerator compartment, wrapped in a cloth. If white mould grows on it, just scrape it off with a knife.
