Adopt a sheep from the flock of "Friesenhof" in Pellworm (Germany) and receive your knitting yarn or yoga mat from dyke wool at home. Sönke will take care of your adoption and take its picture. You will also be able to download the adoption certificate, and if you wish, plan your visit to the farm. As the production coming from one sheep is big, the adoption is shared among various people. If you wish to have a bigger share, you may adopt more than once. You do not enter into any long-term commitment: Although your adoption will be renewed automatically, you will always be informed in advance and may decide to cancel your adoption at any time in case the preparation has not started yet.
You adopt a sheep from our farm in Pellworm (Germany). The livestock farming and the produce are both certified as organic by the European Union as of 2018. Our Texel sheep are excellently adapted to the harsh North Sea climate here and, in addition to robust wool, also provide first-class meat. The breed originally comes from the Dutch island of Texel and has also been at home on the North Frisian coast since the middle of the last century. We have been running our sheep farm in a certified ecological way since 2018. Our farm is a family business and we have been managing it for four generations. The farm includes 40 hectares of grassland. We keep our sheep on the dyke and on the pastures around the farm. The sheep are irreplaceable for the maintenance of the dyke. They keep the turf short, tread down the dyke and are very important for coastal protection. Without sheep there is no stable dyke. For our CrowdFarming project we work together with a shepherd friend. His name is Torben Jacobs and he keeps his sheep on the neighboring section of the dyke. Our dyke neighbor, so to say :-) He supplies us with part of his wool. Torben doesn't run his farm in a certified ecological way, but as a dyke sheep farm it is just as natural and extensive as ours. In January, the sheep are sheared in preparation for lambing. When shearing sheep, we take great care while handling the animals. Due to the harsh North Sea climate, the wool of the Texel sheep is coarser than regular sheep's wool. This makes the wool fiber very robust. From January to April the sheep are in our barn. During this time the lambs are born. For me as a shepherd, the lambing season is the most strenuous, but also the most exciting and beautiful time. I look after my sheep around the clock and accompany the births of the lambs. We harvest hay and silage for winter feeding from our own land. After the birth of their lambs, the sheep also receive concentrated feed, which we buy from an organic farm on the mainland. Our flock has an average age of 4 years and the maximum lifespan of a sheep is about 10 years. Old sheep are slaughtered, and the meat is used according to the quality. The lambs are slaughtered when they are 6 to 12 months old. The lamb is of extremely good quality. Known as “salt marsh lamb” it is considered a delicacy. We market some directly through our farm shop. We sell the remaining lambs to the mainland. We keep 20 to 25 female lambs for our offspring. For as long as you want to keep your adoption, and we can continue taking care of it, you can renew year after year. If your adoption stops producing for any reason, we will replace it with another, and we guarantee your delivery from the production of other units. Your adoption produces an average of 5kg of organic sheep wool each season. With this amount we can produce one yoga mat or six balls of knitting yarn . 4 CrowdFarmers will share the adoption, and each one will receive a box containing 1kg of knitting yarn or yoga mat from dyke wool.
We will send you the box that you choose when placing the adoption: 1 x __Yoga mat made from North German dyke wool__ (1.4kg, 200 x 70 cm) or: 6 x __North German dyke knitting yarn__ (100g each, 185m each) Note: You can switch between the two beautiful wool products from one year to the next, and the costs for the sheep sponsorship will adjust accordingly. __About the yoga mat:__ The upper side of this beautiful mat is made of wool pile, the bottom side is made of wool felt. While you meditate doing yoga, your adopted sheep meditates ruminating on the lush green dykes by the North Sea. The wool has been gently washed and not dyed in order to preserve the good properties of the wool. Wool is naturally temperature-regulating, warm, hygienic and breathable. This makes it the ideal natural raw material for a yoga mat. The antibacterial properties of the untreated, only washed wool provide a "self-cleaning" effect and prevent odours, so you should always dry and air it well. __About the knitting yarn:__ Made from 100% new sheep's wool and made from high-quality worsted wool, this knitting yarn is the perfect starting material for getting creative. Gloves, a nice wool sweater, warm socks... there are no limits to your imagination. While you are knitting, your adopted sheep is grazing on the dyke here on the North Sea island of Pellworm. You will receive sturdy worsted yarn, 4-thread count, with a ball length of 185 metres. We recommend a needle size of 3 to 4. Extra sorting according to long fibers: Before spinning, the short fibers are combed out, which reduces the pilling effect. After spinning, the wool is steamed to stabilize it and give it volume and softness.
When will you receive it?
Our ewes are shorn before lambing season in January. Our female offspring are sheared for the first time in June at the age of 15 months. We then bring the wool to the mainland for processing. From the end of winter, we can then send our wool products to your home.
