The project

Adopt an avocado tree from the farm "Font del Salsero" in Sollana (Spain) and receive your avocados at home. Berta will take care of your adoption and take its picture. You will also be able to download the adoption certificate, and if you wish, plan your visit to the farm. You do not enter into any long-term commitment: once you have received your avocados and enjoyed the experience, you may decide to renew and extend the adoption.

What do you adopt?

You adopt an avocado tree from our farm in Sollana (Spain) that we cultivate following the Organic Farming regulations of the European Union. We are already in the process of converting and expect to be officially certified by 2022. When placing the adoption you can choose a name which we will use to identify your avocado tree. The avocado tree grows quite rigorously and needs to be carefully pruned twice a year. It flowers throughout spring, which coincides with the ripening of the fruits that are in harvest. It's very important to choose the optimal ripening time to harvest avocados. The entire harvesting and packaging process is carried out meticulously by hand so as to not bruise or damage the fruit. This is our secret so that you can enjoy the maximum quality of our avocados. Fortunately, the avocado trees in our area have very few pests. By using organic fertilisers that nourish the plants, keep them healthy, and make sure that they're welcoming to beneficial fauna and natural predators, our avocados grow happily without the need for any synthetic chemicals. That's why we can guarantee that they're 100% free of any chemical residue. This is reflected by the organic farming certification that we have, and the hundreds of flowers that grow during the spring alongside the avocado trees. We hope to continue producing our avocados for many years to come, and we'd even like our children to do so after us. This is why we care so much about the across-the-board sustainability of the farm and its environment, in particular, the water consumption of our avocados. The roots of avocado trees are very shallow and although they need moisture from the soil, they often come out of the ground in search of more oxygen. It's easy to see them around the trunks of adult trees. We have a modern irrigation system on our farm so that we can give each tree the water it needs without wasting a single drop. On top of that, we have the advantage of being located in an area with natural runoff, with an artesian well in the middle of the farm. This makes it easy for the trees to find moisture in the ground without the roots getting waterlogged. Your adoption is 3 years old and its productive life is 30 years. For as long as you want to keep your adoption, and we can continue taking care of it, you can renew year after year. If your adoption stops being able to produce for any reason, we will replace it with an other, and we guarantee your delivery from the produce of others for that season. Your avocado tree produces an average of 20kg of avocados each season. You do not have to commit to ordering the entire harvest though. Each season you can decide how much you want to reserve, and you pay the maintenance cost according to that amount. This way you only pay for what you plan to consume, and we can offer any surplus harvest to others.

What will you receive?

You can reserve between 2 and 5 boxes for the season, and then progressively plan the delivery of your boxes for any of the delivery dates available in the shipment calendar. Shipping format: __4kg box of avocados__ * Lamb Hass (April - May): This variety is pear-shaped, medium-large, with a rough, green skin which turns black when ripe. It has a creamy texture, an intense flavour, and a greater amount of fat compared to some other varieties * Farming in conversion to Organic Farming since 2020 * Picked the day before shipment at their optimal point of ripeness and shipped in a cardboard box without plastics * The box includes some extra fruits, in case some of them arrive damaged * Our farm is not a screw factory: each fruit is unique in appearance and size * One kilo contains between 3 and 5 fruits (the box contains between 12 and 20 fruits depending on the size) * Keep them at room temperature until they are ripe, once they are fully ripe put them in the fridge to keep them longer * It is a climacteric fruit which is harvested when it reaches physiological maturity; after being picked from the tree it then continues to ripen until it has reached its optimum point for consumption * Important: The fruits usually arrive hard, so we recommend keeping them at room temperature until they ripen and are ready to eat. If you receive pieces that are already ripe, you can eat them straight away or keep them in the fridge The Lamb Hass comes from the Hass variety, which is the most valued on the market. It produces fruits of higher quality and ones that can be harvested at later dates. The fruits are large (150-350 g), with pebbly skin, and an excellent seed:skin:flesh ratio of 15:14:71. The fruit is at its best for eating when its skin is totally black and soft to the touch all over. It completes its ripening once picked (10-20 days later, depending on the season and room temperature). As we don't use any ripening chambers or post-harvest chemical treatments, you can delay the ripening of part of your box by storing the avocados in the fridge and they'll restart the process once they're back at room temperature. Once ripe, the tender and creamy flesh can easily be scooped out with a spoon and will have a cream to yellowish-green colour and a mild flavour with notes of hazelnut and/or walnut.

When will you receive it?

You'll receive your avocados from approximately mid-March to mid-May. Weather permitting, the delivery season may be extended by a few weeks.

Why should you adopt?
Know who, how and where your food is produced. Source your food in a conscious, direct and consistent manner.
Buying without intermediaries allows the producer to obtain better prices. This helps generate better jobs and social standards in rural areas.
When you adopt something, you allow the producer to ensure the sale at a fixed price and to produce on demand. This also avoids wasting food that is grown without being sold.
It supports producers who strive for environmentally friendly packaging and cultivation practices.
