The project

Adopt an avocado tree from the farm "Finca Marroquino" in Cútar (Spain) and receive your harvest in the form of mini avocados at home. Paco will take care of your adoption and take its picture. Also, you will be able to download the adoption certificate and, if you wish, plan your visit to the farm. You do not enter into any long-term commitment: Although your adoption will be renewed automatically, you will always be informed in advance and may decide to cancel your adoption at any time as long as the preparation has not yet begun.

What do you adopt?

You adopt an avocado tree from our farm in Cútar (Spain) that we cultivate following the Organic Farming regulations of the European Union. We are already in the process of converting and expect to be officially certified by 2022. During the process of adoption you can choose a name which we will use to identify your avocado tree. I grow several different varieties of avocado here at Finca Marroquino. The Hass variety is the most popular variety grown in the world, originating in California in 1926 from a seed from Guatemala. This variety, renowned for its quality, has a long harvest season and is responsible for the boom in global avocado consumption since the 1960s. The hass avocado often produces smaller fruits that are little appreciated by the retailers, but they're actually of the same quality as larger ones. They're 'baby' avocados that maintain the pulp/stone proportion, weigh less and can be eaten whole, without having to keep the other half in the fridge. We carefully pick the avocados from the tree and pack them in your box. It's an artisanal and traditional process in which we use no machinery because the land is steep. Our trees are grown on a family-run farm that has been in the process of converting to Organic Farming since 2020. What's more, our farm uses modern drip irrigation systems to save water. The most special thing about our harvest is its flavour. We love to make delicious avocado smoothies and homemade guacamole with our fruit. We haven't won any prizes, but we do have the satisfaction of knowing that our friends and family enjoy the excellent quality of the fruit. Whenever we give them out as a gift, we feel very rewarded! Your adoption is 22 years old and its productive life is around 100 years. For as long as you want to keep it and we can continue taking care of it, you can renew your adoption year after year. If your adoption dies, we will replace it with no additional cost assuring the delivery of your harvest from others. Your avocado tree produces an average of 35kg of mini avocados each season. You do not have to commit to the consumption of the whole harvest. Each season you may decide what quantity to reserve and pay the maintenance in accordance with that amount. This way you will only pay for what you consume and will be able to sell any remaining harvest to others.

What will you receive?

During the season, you will be able to receive the harvest that you are reserving now: a minimum of 3 and a maximum of 14 boxes. Once you paid for the adoption, you will be able to plan your shipments from your user account. Shipping format: __2.5kg box of mini avocados__: * Pear-shaped, dark green skin that turns black when ripe, yellowish pulp with a nutty flavour, very creamy texture, small seed * Farming in transition to organic farming since 2020 * Picked the day before shipment at their optimal point of ripeness and shipped in a cardboard box without plastics * Our trees are not a screw factory: each fruit is unique in appearance and size * One kilo contains between 8 and 12 fruits * Keep them at room temperature until they are ripe, once they are fully ripe put them in the fridge to keep them longer * It is a climacteric fruit, harvested when it reaches physiological ripeness but continues to evolve after harvesting until it is ready for consumption * Important: The fruits usually arrive hard, keep them at room temperature until they are ready to eat; if you receive an already ripe piece, you can put it in the fridge or eat it straight away The mini hass avocado is not a different variety of fruit, it is the same, but smaller fruit with the same pulp to stone ratio. This fruit is normally discarded at traditional stores as it doesn't meet the minimum size requirements. Besides having an exceptional quality and maintaining the same pulp/stone ratio, the Baby Hass has can also be eaten in one go, instead of having to keep one half in the fridge.

When will you receive it?

The seasonal weather can bring flowering forward or delay it somewhat, but it normally takes place in March. It can also affect the fat levels and weight of the fruit at the time of harvesting. The normal harvest time for Hass avocados in our area is from December until late March.

Why should you adopt?
Know who, how and where your food is produced. Source your food in a conscious, direct and consistent manner.
Buying without intermediaries allows the producer to obtain better prices. This helps generate better jobs and social standards in rural areas.
When you adopt something, you allow the producer to ensure the sale at a fixed price and to produce on demand. This also avoids wasting food that is grown without being sold.
It supports producers who strive for environmentally friendly packaging and cultivation practices.
