The project

Adopt a wheat field from "Finca Picarnero" in Belchite (Spain) and receive your harvest in the form of organic pasta at home. The Farmer Rafael will take care of your adoption and take its picture. Also, you will be able to download the adoption certificate and, if you wish, plan your visit to the farm. You do not enter into any long-term commitment: once you receive your harvest and you enjoyed the experience, you may decide to renew and extend the adoption.

What do you adopt?
Adopt a wheat field that we cultivate under the Organic Farming regulations of the European Union since 2005. We propose you to adopt 100 m2 of a very special farm where we grow organic durum wheat. After harvesting and processing, this wheat is used to make 5 kilos of delicious wholegrain pasta. The peculiarity of this product lies in its origin and the environmentally friendly cultivation philosophy of durum wheat. The fields are located in the Belchite plain in the northern Spanish region of Aragon. The plain is one of the most valuable and best preserved steppe habitats on the European continent. It is a place where unique bird species live and breed their young. It has been visited for years from November to February by a large number of cranes from Central and Northern Europe. I run the family business together with my son Jorge. We are a family of farmers from the nearby town of Codo. The town is located in one of the areas in Europe most threatened by depopulation and rural exodus. In order to coordinate the entire production process of pasta and its subsequent marketing, we cooperate with [Riet Vell](http://http://www.crowdfarming.com/en/farmer/riet-vell/up/buy-organic-rice-riet-vell), a company that has been active in the organic production and marketing of food from areas of particular ecological value since 2001. Riet Vell has received several awards and recognitions for its work and career, and we have been working together for almost 20 years.
What will you receive?
The box that we will send contains __5Kg of organic whole-grain pasta__: 5 x __macaroni__ (500g package) 5 x __spirals__ (500g package) All the products carry the Riet Vell logo. The whole-grain pasta is very nutritious and does not need more cooking time than regular pasta. Once the wheat is harvested it is processed into flour in a small mill and then transported to a family enterprise located in Moià (Barcelona) that has been dedicated to the production of pasta since 1880. The dry pasta can be conserved in perfect condition for a long period if it is stored in a cool and dry location.
When will you receive it?
The wheat is harvested June and we will produce your pasta during the summer. Please, check the deadline for participating in this project (deadline for adoption) below. As of this date the Farmer will start preparing the orders that are to be shipped. You may select the delivery date of your box as suggested by the Farmer at check-out.
Why should you adopt?
* Learn who produces your food, how and where. Receive your food in a conscious manner. * Buy directly from the farmer. Help to generate wealth and better jobs in the rural areas. * Plan ahead and enable the Farmer to produce on demand. This way we can avoid overproduction and fight food waste. * Reward Farmers who make an effort to use environmentally-friendly packaging and cultivation techniques.

Rafael Cuevas Salvador
My name is Rafael Cuevas Salvador, and together with my son Jorge, we have been the property's owners since 1985. Shortly after the purchase I proposed putting small weirs in the gully to favor birds and foster the presence of a scarce resource in this zone, namely water. Towards the end of the 1990s we began to see cranes in the area on a regular basis during winter months and one of their preferred resting areas was our property. Since the beginning both my son and I have taken measures to facilitate their presence and ensure they were not disturbed. Cultivation in this zone is irregular and production is limited as a result of the arid conditions, which nevertheless results in high-quality wheat. From there arose my relation with Riet Vell and I have been patnering with them since 2005. Riet Vell has for years been buying wheat from growers from the area for conversion into pasta and markets it along with other products such as rice and legumes. Now we have reached an agreement to offer a new product, with complete traceability from our property in Picarnero, in Belchite, to the consumer. The pasta is of great quality and helps in the maintenance of valuable areas for migratory European cranes and contributes to keeping alive a rural zone that is threatened by depopulation.

"For my son Jorge and for me, as farmers in a low production zone like the Belchite and Codo areas, to be able to provide, without intermediaries, the fruit of our work to appreciative consumers who value the effort and affection behind these pasta packages, brings enormous satisfaction. Also it is a light of hope for the future, hope so that not only the quantity of kilos produced is valued, but also the quality and everything that goes with the production and consumption of a certain food."

Finca Picarnero
The Picarnero landscape where we have the property is located in the wide Ebro River valley, near the Planerón Ornithological Reserve, a nature reserve of very high environmental value managed by SEO/BirdLife for the protection of birds and steppe habitats. On the property, besides the cultivation of hard wheat, we have a seasonal gully that in winter months usually fills with water, providing a magnificent resting stop for cranes. The crane is a migratory bird that nests in central and northern Europe and is considered an emblematic species in many countries. In the property we have certified organic production and have no means of using irrigation methods. The wheat grows solely as a result of the limited rains that fall in the area, one of the most arid on the continent. This circumstance means lower production but with an elevated quality for its transformation into pasta. Normally the wheat produced is sold in bulk together with output from other growers from a wide area. What we propose with this initiative is a differentiated outlet for the production from this property and specifically from this zone, which limited as it is, has a grand importance for biodiversity conservation and the local economy.
