You do not enter into any long-term commitment: once you receive your harvest and you enjoyed the experience, you may decide to renew and extend the adoption.
You adopt an avocado tree from our farm in Competa (Spain). Cultivation certified organic by the European Union since 2002. During the process of adoption you can choose a name which we will use to identify your avocado tree. The avocados trees in our Montealegre project are part of a series of farms that we cultivate in the Axarquía region, in the east of the province of Málaga between the Sierra Tejeda and the Mediterranean Sea. Due to its history and the particularities of the land, this region has many more smallholdings than large farms. Our avocados trees are part of the small farms owned by our partners, who have been cultivating them all their lives. And today, they form part of a project aimed at getting a fair value for the product. This means that you're adopting an avocado tree grown by farmers who work the land with respect and the natural resources available, of two varieties characterised by their smooth skin and creamy flesh: Bacon and Fuerte. Avocado farming has boomed in recent decades and the fruit is now a staple for many households. However, avocado trees were already being grown five thousand years in the Mayan, Inca and Olmec cultures, while the Aztecs knew it as the 'fertility fruit' thanks to its supposed properties, and because of the very particular shape of the fruits. The avocado tree is a vigorous tree that can reach a height of twenty metres. Its ideal climate is tropical-subtropical, so it requires mild winters and summers. The sex of avocado trees is interesting: their flowers are actually hermaphrodites, but self-pollination is complex due to the stamens and the pistil ripening at different times. Therefore, they need flowers in different sexual states to achieve pollination, but there are no female and male avocados! Your adoption is 21 years old and its productive life is around 40 years. For as long as you want to keep it and we can continue taking care of it, you can renew your adoption year after year. If your adoption dies, we will replace it with no additional cost assuring the delivery of your harvest from others. Your avocado tree produces an average of 16kg of organic early avocado each season. You do not have to commit to the consumption of the whole harvest. Each season you may decide what quantity to reserve and pay the maintenance in accordance with that amount. This way you will only pay for what you consume and will be able to sell any remaining harvest to others.
During harvest season you can progressively receive the quantity of harvest that you reserve on the moment of adoption. Shipping format: __4kg box of organic avocados__ * Bacon (October - November): round, medium-large with smooth skin of dark green color and darkens a little more as it matures, less fat than other varieties, very suitable for making guacamole * Fuerte (October - December): pear-shaped, medium-large size, smooth and thin skin, green colour when ripe with small whitish spots, less fat, very suitable for making guacamole * Organic farming certified by the European Organic Farming label since 2002 * Picked the day before shipment at their optimal point of ripeness and shipped in a cardboard box without plastics * Our trees are not a screw factory: each fruit is unique in appearance and size * One kilo contains between 6 and 8 fruits (the box contains 26 fruits approximately, depending on the size) * Keep them at room temperature until they are ripe, once they are fully ripe put them in the fridge to keep them longer * It is a climacteric fruit, harvested when it reaches physiological ripeness but continues to evolve after harvesting until it is ready for consumption * Important: The fruits usually arrive hard, keep them at room temperature until they reach they are ready to eat; if you receive an alread ripe piece, you can put it in the fridge or eat it straight away
When will you receive it?
The avocado is a fruit whose quality and flavour are perceived when it is harvested at the right moment of ripeness. Producing avocados in Southern Europe means that we can adjust the harvesting campaign and achieve a really delicious fruit. If you haven't tried a avocado with these characteristics, you really don't know its flavour! The harvest season for these varieties is very early, starting in early October and, depending on the weather, lasting until the beginning of spring.
