Antonio will take care of your adoption and take its picture. Also, you will be able to download the adoption certificate and, if you wish, plan your visit to the farm. You do not enter into any long-term commitment: once you receive your harvest and you enjoyed the experience, you may decide to renew and extend the adoption.
You adopt a mango tree from our farm in Competa (Spain). Cultivation certified organic by the European Union since 2016. During the process of adoption you can choose a name which we will use to identify your mango tree. They can be grown in southern Europe thanks mainly to the mild winters on the coasts of Málaga and Granada, with minimum temperatures above 5-7°C. As they're a species native to monsoon climates, the amount of rainfall isn't as important as its distribution throughout the year, with a mix of dry seasons and other wet ones. For example, rainfall during the flowering and harvesting season prevents the tree from yielding fruit. Fortunately, on our farm we also grow avocados and we would like to send you a part of the harvest. The avocado is a vigorous tree that can reach a height of twenty metres. Its ideal climate is tropical-subtropical, so it requires mild winters and summers. The avocados and mango trees in our Montealegre project are part of a series of farms that we cultivate in the Axarquía region, in the east of the province of Málaga between the Sierra Tejeda and the Mediterranean Sea. Due to its history and the particularities of the land, this region has many more smallholdings than large farms. Our avocados and mango trees are part of the small farms owned by our partners, who have been cultivating them all their lives. And today, they form part of a project aimed at getting a fair value for the product. This means that you're adopting a mango tree grown by farmers who work the land with respect and the natural resources available. They include varieties that are successful in the region thanks to their adaptation to the climate and their organoleptic properties. Your adoption is 16 years old and its productive life is around 40 years. For as long as you want to keep it and we can continue taking care of it, you can renew your adoption year after year. If your adoption dies, we will replace it with no additional cost assuring the delivery of your harvest from others. Your mango tree produces an average of 21kg each season. You do not have to commit to the consumption of the whole harvest. Each season you may decide what quantity to reserve and pay the maintenance in accordance with that amount. This way you will only pay for what you consume and will be able to sell any remaining harvest to others.
During harvest season you can progressively receive the quantity of harvest that you reserve at the moment of adoption. When will you receive it?
Avocados and mangos are fruits whose quality and flavour are perceived when harvested at the right moment of ripeness. Cultivating them in Southern Europe means that we can adjust the harvesting campaign and achieve really delicious fruits. If you haven't tried an avocado or mango with these characteristics, you really don't know its flavour! The harvesting season for these varieties begins at the beginning of October and, depending on the weather, they can last until the end of December.
