What do you adopt?

You adopt a pear tree from our farm in Jumilla (Spain). The cultivation is certified as organic by the European Union as of 2008, and as Demeter as of 2014. When placing the adoption you can choose a name which we will use to identify your pear tree. The pear tree is native to Western Asia and belongs to the Rosaceae family. However, our pears are of the Ercolina variety, an early-harvest species of Italian origin thought to date back to the sixteenth century, which has also found its perfect place on our farm, Macabeo. In fact, Jumilla is home to the largest production area of this type of pear and even has the Protected Designation of Origin known as 'Pera de Jumilla'. The Ercolina pear comes from the European pear *(Pyrus communis*) and, like most pear trees, it grows upright and has average vigour. It ripens earlier than other pears. The Mediterranean climate here provides the fruit with many hours of sunshine, which is ideal for the optimal development of this type of pear tree as it's one of the key factors in being able to guarantee its exquisite flavour and quality. Together with our way of pampering the fruits using organic farming and Demeter techniques, this is the perfect combination for our pear trees to give us pears with sweet aromas and a wonderful taste every year. To encourage the maximum amount of sunlight for all the fruits, and to develop the characteristic reddish hue on the skin, we both prune and thin the trees by hand. Of course, we also hand-pick the fruit. Your adoption is 8 years old and its maximum lifespan is 30 years. For as long as you want to keep your adoption, and we can continue taking care of it, you can renew year after year. If your adoption stops producing for any reason, we will replace it with another, and guarantee you the delivery from the production of other units. Your pear tree produces an average of 48kg of Demeter organic pears PDO Pera de Jumilla each season. You do not have to commit to ordering the entire harvest though. Each season you can decide how much you want to reserve, and you pay the maintenance cost according to that amount. This way you only pay for what you plan to consume, and we can offer any surplus harvest to others.

What will you receive?

You can reserve between 2 and 12 boxes for the season, and then plan the deliveries for any of the delivery dates available in the shipment calendar. Shipping format: __4kg box of Demeter organic pears PDO Pera de Jumilla__ * Ercolina: conical and pear-shaped; greenish yellow skin, with a characteristic red hue on the side where it has received direct sunlight; white flesh; crisp, juicy and sweet * Organic farming certified by the European organic farming label since 2008, and biodynamic certified by Demeter since 2014 * Harvested on request, shipped without wax or preservative treatments in a cardboard box without plastics * We do not keep the fruits in cold storage, they go directly from the tree to your doorstep * One kilo contains between 8 and 9 fruits * You can savour these pears whole, add to salads, with a cheese board, in cakes or even baked with chocolate. In some countries, it's common to use them in traditional dishes such as pear tatin, pear chutney or wine-poached pears * To keep our fruit fresh for as long as possible, it's best to keep them in the fridge at 3-4ºC

When will you receive it?

The harvesting season of our Ercolina pear begins when the fruit reaches its optimum ripeness and flavour, with the first pears being picked in mid-July and, depending on the year, the last ones being picked in mid-September.

Why should you adopt?
Know who, how and where your food is produced. Source your food in a conscious, direct and consistent manner.
Buying without intermediaries allows the producer to obtain better prices. This helps generate better jobs and social standards in rural areas.
When you adopt something, you allow the producer to ensure the sale at a fixed price and to produce on demand. This also avoids wasting food that is grown without being sold.
It supports producers who strive for environmentally friendly packaging and cultivation practices.
