Adopt an avocado tree from the farm "Finca Los Pepones" in Vélez-Málaga (Spain) and receive your harvest in the form of early avocados at home. María will take care of your adoption and take its picture. Also, you will be able to download the adoption certificate and, if you wish, plan your visit to the farm. You do not enter into any long-term commitment: once you receive your harvest and you enjoyed the experience, you may decide to renew and extend the adoption.
You adopt an avocado tree from our farm in Vélez-Málaga (Spain) that we cultivate following the Organic Farming regulations of the European Union. We are in the process of converting and hope to get certified in 2024. During the process of adoption you can choose a name which we will use to identify your avocado tree. The avocado trees are of the Bacon and Fuerte varieties. They're very similar trees, growing to about three to four metres and with a crown diameter of about 5 m². Over the years, the trunk becomes very robust and the root system is very broad and above ground, so you easily find the roots of the trees if you walk around the farm. Most of the trees are adults, although there are also newly planted trees that have replaced the ones that died naturally. The adults produce an average of 30kg each season, while the younger ones will start to produce within three to four years. These varieties are planted to aid the pollination of other varieties such as Hass or Lamb Hass. This is because the avocado tree has a hermaphrodite flower that opens its flowers twice, first as a female and then as a male. As a result, we need to have two varieties that open their flowers in female and male versions at different times, as this means that open female and male flowers coincide and the bees can work and pollinate. The Fuerte and Bacon varieties open their flowers at different times than the Hass variety. However, Bacon and Fuerte are avocado varieties with exceptional flavour and quality. What's more, as they start their season earlier than other varieties, we can produce avocados for longer throughout the year. That's why we chose these varieties and increased the plantation. Your adoption is 21 years old and its productive life is around 50 years. For as long as you want to keep it and we can continue taking care of it, you can renew your adoption year after year. If your adoption dies, we will replace it with no additional cost assuring the delivery of your harvest from others. Your avocado tree produces an average of 12.5kg of early avocados each season. You do not have to commit to the consumption of the whole harvest. Each season you may decide what quantity to reserve and pay the maintenance in accordance with that amount. This way you will only pay for what you consume and will be able to sell any remaining harvest to others.
During harvest season you can progressively receive the quantity of harvest that you reserve at the moment of adoption. You will be able to receive a minimum of 2 boxes, which can be increased up to 5 boxes according to your needs. Shipping format: __2,5kg box of avocados__ * Bacon (October - November): round, medium-large with smooth skin of dark green color, darkens a little more as it matures, less fat than other varieties, very suitable for making guacamole * Fuerte (October - February): pear-shaped, medium-large size, smooth and thin skin, green colour when ripe with small whitish spots, less fat, very suitable for making guacamole * Farming in transition to organic farming since 2021 * We do not store the fruit in cold chambers, they go directly from the tree to your doorstep * The box includes some extra fruits, in case some of them arrive damaged * Our trees are not a screw factory: each fruit is unique in appearance and size * One kilo contains between 3 and 6 fruits (the box contains between 6 and 12 fruits depending on the size) * Keep them at room temperature until they are ripe, once they are fully ripe put them in the fridge to keep them longer * It is a climacteric fruit, harvested when it reaches physiological ripeness but continues to evolve after harvesting until it is ready for consumption * Important: The fruits usually arrive hard, keep them at room temperature until they reach they are ready to eat; if you receive an alread ripe piece, you can put it in the fridge or eat it straight away When you receive the avocados, you'll have to wait for them to be ready to eat. They should arrive very hard, although some may be ready to eat. How do I know when they're ready for consumption? First of all, when you press the skin, it should give all over. If only part of the fruit gives, it's starting to ripen but it still has a couple of days to be ready. Second, if you remove the stalk at the top and it's yellow, that means that it's ripe. If it's still green. it means that you'll have to wait a little bit longer. How can I get them to ripen a little earlier? A little trick is to wrap the fruit in newspaper and put it in a warmer area of your house, for example, in the kitchen pantry instead of in a fruit bowl. How can I make them last longer? If they all ripen at the same time and you want to have more time to enjoy them, you can put them in the fridge and take them out when you want to eat them. I recommend taking them out one day before eating so that they're not cold and have a softer pulp.
When will you receive it?
The season for these varieties begins in October and ends in December, so deliveries will be made during this period. However, they're fruits and we're fully dependent on the weather, so these dates may vary slightly.
