The project

Adopt a lemon tree from the "Finca El Chifle" farm in Benamargosa (Spain) and receive your lemons at home. María will take care of your adoption and take its picture. You will also be able to download the adoption certificate, and if you wish, plan your visit to the farm. You do not enter into any long-term commitment: Although your adoption will be renewed automatically, you will always be informed in advance and may decide to cancel your adoption at any time as long as the preparation has not yet begun.

What do you adopt?

You adopt a lemon tree from our farm in Benamargosa (Spain). The cultivation here is certified as organic by the European Union as of 1999. When placing the adoption you can choose a name which we will use to identify your lemon tree. Our lemon trees are of the Fino variety, the most common in the area. They're adult trees now, so they have a height of about 3-4 metres and a diameter of 3-4 metres as well. Their bark is rough, their branches are full of thorns, and their leaves are evergreen, rigid and tapered to a point on the non-stem end, typical of citrus trees. This variety belongs to the citrus genus (Citrus limon) and has two very fragrant blooms, so we can enjoy two harvests each season. Our lemon farm is a small plot that my mother inherited from my grandparents. At the end of the 1990s, my parents decided to grow lemons there organically. Your adoption is 23 years old and its maximum lifespan is 50 years. For as long as you want to keep your adoption, and we can continue taking care of it, you can renew year after year. If your adoption stops producing for any reason, we will replace it with another, and guarantee you the delivery from the production of other units. By adopting a lemon tree you can receive up to 12.5kg of lemons each season. You do not have to commit to ordering the entire harvest though. Each season you can decide how much you want to reserve, and you pay the maintenance cost according to that amount. This way you only pay for what you plan to consume, and we can offer any surplus harvest to others.

What will you receive?

During the season, you will be able to receive the harvest that you are reserving now: a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 5 boxes. Once you have paid for the adoption, you will be able to plan your shipments from your user account. Shipping format: __Box of 2.5kg of organic lemons__ * Fino (October - April): oval shape; yellow or green skin with a thin and smooth rind; pale yellow pulp; bitter flavour * Organic farming certified by the European Organic Farming label since 1999 * They are not treated with wax or preservatives (you can use the peel) * We do not keep fruits in cold storage, they go directly from the tree to your doorstep * Picked the day before shipment at their optimal point of ripeness and shipped in a cardboard box without plastic * Our farm is not a screw factory: each fruit is unique in appearance and size * One kilo contains between 6 and 10 fruits * If you keep them in a fresh and airy place, they can last up to 2-3 weeks in good condition (if you want them to last longer, you can keep them in the fridge) * You'll see that the first lemons of the season may have a greenish hue, but over the weeks they'll take on the typical yellow tone of this variety You'll receive freshly picked lemons, a crop that has been traditional in the Málaga area for decades thanks to the mild climate being perfect for growing healthy and strong lemon trees. The colour of the lemon depends on the temperature: the colder the weather, the more colour it takes on. As a result, in the first half of the season you'll receive greener lemons and more yellow ones at the end.

When will you receive it?

The season begins in early autumn and ends in late spring, as this variety flowers twice a year. Lemons from September to December are usually greener, while those from January to June are more yellow. This is something very characteristic of this variety of lemons.

Why should you adopt?
Know who, how and where your food is produced. Source your food in a conscious, direct and consistent manner.
Buying without intermediaries allows the producer to obtain better prices. This helps generate better jobs and social standards in rural areas.
When you adopt something, you allow the producer to ensure the sale at a fixed price and to produce on demand. This also avoids wasting food that is grown without being sold.
It supports producers who strive for environmentally friendly packaging and cultivation practices.
