The project

Adopt an orange tree from the "Finca Jelanisol-Montebelo" farm in Gibraleón (Spain) and receive your Demeter organic oranges and Demeter organic grapefruits at home. Friedrich will take care of your adoption and take its picture. You will also be able to download the adoption certificate, and if you wish, plan your visit to the farm. You do not enter into any long-term commitment: Although your adoption will be renewed automatically, you will always be informed in advance and may decide to cancel your adoption at any time as long as the preparation has not yet begun.

What do you adopt?

You adopt an orange tree from our farm in Gibraleón (Spain). The cultivation is certified as organic by the European Union as of 1992, and as Demeter as of 1994. When placing the adoption you can choose a name which we will use to identify your orange tree. The orange trees from our farm, Jelanisol-Montebello, are part of a personal project. As a result, for more than twenty-five years I've been studying the relationships between people, the land and the fairest way of distributing its fruits. Thanks to this, I've achieved an ecosystem in which our orange trees interact with nature, in balance with the different layers that make it up. We produce five different varieties of oranges (Rutaceae family): Navelina, Salustiana, Lane Late, Navel Powell and Chislett Navel. The trees are all identical, although each variety has its own features. This means that we can offer a varied selection and produce oranges for six consecutive months. We plant the orange trees together with other citrus fruits, because they're very well adapted to the climate in the southwest of Spain, thanks to the many hours of sunshine per year and the thermal contrasts in the region. This makes it easier to grow them, as the trees set the optimal conditions for their development. Along with your oranges we include grapefruits of the Star Ruby variety in your box. As a fruit, the grapefruit stems from a natural cross between the sweet orange and the pomelo. Many different varieties of grapefruit have since appeared, with the Star Ruby being the most popular among consumers. Its characteristic reddish-pink colour is due to the lycopene pigment, acquired through a genetic mutation. Rest assured that your orange tree is part of a habitat in which each element has a function that benefits the other. This balance means that our farm is like a living being, which regulates itself and therefore protects itself from harmful external agents. And this is all thanks to our hard work running the farm in line with biodynamic agriculture and permaculture criteria. Your adoption is 16 years old and its maximum lifespan is 30 years. For as long as you want to keep your adoption, and we can continue taking care of it, you can renew year after year. If your adoption stops producing for any reason, we will replace it with another, and guarantee you the delivery from the production of other units. Your orange tree produces an average of 80kg of Demeter organic oranges and Demeter organic grapefruits each season. You do not have to commit to ordering the entire harvest though. Each season you can decide how much you want to reserve, and you pay the maintenance cost according to that amount. This way you only pay for what you plan to consume, and we can offer any surplus harvest to others.

What will you receive?

During the season, you will be able to receive the harvest that you are reserving now: a minimum of 0 and a maximum of 0 boxes. Once you have paid for the adoption, you will be able to plan your shipments from your user account. Shipping format: __Box of 4kg of Demeter organic oranges and 6kg of Demeter organic grapefruits__ * Navelinas (November - January): They have a small prominent navel, an oval shape, and are very juicy * Salustiana (January-March): round shape, medium size, orange-coloured fruits, thin skin, high juice content, perfect balance between tartness and sweetness * Lane Late (March to April): medium size and with very few seeds, with great sweetness and slight acidity, very juicy, it is a late variety; they are oranges especially recommended for juices, but also very tasty for the table * Navel powel (March - April): round shape, large size, sweet with low acidity, slightly lower juice content * Navel Chislett (February - April): the oranges are quite large with a thin and smooth skin. They are very bright orange in colour, and contain a lot of juice with low acidity * Star Ruby grapefruit (December - early April): slightly flattened balloon shape, thick yellowish peel, ruby (reddish) pulp full of juice, slightly bitter taste and usually seedless * Biodynamic farming certified with the Demeter label since 1994 * Organic farming certified by the European Organic Farming label since 1992 * Picked the day before shipment at their optimal point of ripeness and shipped in a cardboard box without plastics * One kilo of oranges contains between 4 and 6 fruits * One kilo of grapefruits contains between 3 and 6 fruits * If you keep them in a fresh and airy place, they can last up to 2-3 weeks in good condition (if you want them to last longer, you can keep them in the fridge)

When will you receive it?

At Finca Jelanisol-Montebello we start the orange season in December, although sometimes the harvest is brought forward due to the weather. From that point and up to April, we harvest the different varieties according to their state of ripeness. We don't mix varieties in your box, so you can order your fruit according to approximate harvest period below: * Navelina: November to January * Salustiana: January to March * Lane Late: January to March * Navel Powell: February to April * Chislett Navel: February to April

Why should you adopt?
Know who, how and where your food is produced. Source your food in a conscious, direct and consistent manner.
Buying without intermediaries allows the producer to obtain better prices. This helps generate better jobs and social standards in rural areas.
When you adopt something, you allow the producer to ensure the sale at a fixed price and to produce on demand. This also avoids wasting food that is grown without being sold.
It supports producers who strive for environmentally friendly packaging and cultivation practices.
