You do not enter into any long-term commitment: Although your adoption will be renewed automatically, you will always be informed in advance and may decide to cancel your adoption at any time as long as the preparation has not yet begun.
You adopt an avocado tree from our farm in Gibraleón (Spain). The cultivation here is certified as organic by the European Union since 1992. When placing the adoption you can choose a name which we will use to identify your avocado tree. The avocados from our farm, Jelanisol-Montebello, are part of a personal project focused on ethical and sustainable agriculture. As a result, for more than twenty-five years I've been studying the relationships between people, the land, and the fairest way of distributing its fruits. Thanks to this, I've achieved an ecosystem in which our avocados interact with nature, in balance with all the different layers that contribute to the overall environment on the farm. We produce avocados of the Gwen variety. This is a descendant of the Hass variety and was developed by Dr Bob Bergh at the University of California at Riverside, as a result of avocado improvement programmes. It's a very productive and tall plant with columnar growth. What's more, its harvesting period is very long, between six and twelve months! When the trees reach maturity they can continue to produce fairly consistent quantities of harvest throughout the rest of their life cycle. We plant the avocado trees together with citrus and other fruit trees. Our area has a very temperate climate with many hours of sunshine per year and abundant rainfall, this makes it easier to cultivate here, as the trees set the optimal relationships for their own development. Rest assured that your avocado tree is part of a habitat in which each element has a function that benefits the other. This balance means that our farm is like a living being, which regulates itself and therefore protects itself from harmful external agents. And this is all thanks to our hard work running the farm in line with biodynamic agriculture and permaculture criteria. Your adoption is 15 years old and its productive life is 25 years. For as long as you want to keep your adoption, and we can continue taking care of it, you can renew year after year. If your adoption stops being able to produce for any reason, we will replace it with an other, and we guarantee your delivery from the produce of others for that season. Your avocado tree produces an average of 16kg of Demeter organic avocados each season. You do not have to commit to ordering the entire harvest though. Each season you can decide how much you want to reserve, and you pay the maintenance cost according to that amount. This way you only pay for what you plan to consume, and we can offer any surplus harvest to others.
During the season, you will be able to receive the harvest that you are reserving now: a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 4 boxes. Once you paid for the adoption, you will be able to plan your shipments from your user account. Shipping format:__ 4kg box of Demeter organic avocados__ * Gwen (January-April): quite rounded in shape and is slightly more voluminous than Hass, it has a thick and pebbly skin that is easy to peel and remains green at all times, although it changes to a darker green when ripe. The seed is small to medium sized, and the pulp is creamy with a slight walnut flavour * Organic farming certified by the European Organic Farming label since 1992 * Biodynamic farming certified by the Demeter label since 1994 * Picked the day before shipment at their optimal point of ripeness and shipped in a cardboard box without plastics * Our farm is not a screw factory: each fruit is unique in appearance and size * One kilo contains between 4 and 8 fruits * It is a climacteric fruit which is harvested when it reaches physiological maturity; after being picked from the tree it then continues to ripen until it has reached its optimum point for consumption * Important note: the fruits usually arrive hard; to ripen them, keep them at room temperature until they are ready to eat; if you receive some fruit that is already ripe, you can either eat it straight away or keep it in the fridge
When will you receive it?
At Finca Jelanisol-Montebello, we start the avocado season in January, although sometimes the harvest is brought forward due to the weather. From that point, we harvest the areas of the farm where the fruit is at its optimal state of ripeness.
