The project

Adopt a mango tree from the farm "Finca El Solar" in Vélez-Málaga (Spain) and receive your mangoes at home. Salvador will take care of your adoption and take its picture. You will also be able to download the adoption certificate, and if you wish, plan your visit to the farm. You do not enter into any long-term commitment: once you have received your mangoes and enjoyed the experience, you may decide to renew and extend the adoption.

What do you adopt?

You adopt a mango tree from our farm in Vélez-Málaga (Spain) that we cultivate following the Organic Farming regulations of the European Union. We are already in the process of converting and expect to be officially certified by 2022. When placing the adoption you can choose a name which we will use to identify your mango tree. The mangoes that are growing in Malaga are trees selected for their suitability to our climate, and for having unique characteristics that allow them to be shipped to the countries of the European Union. They have been in our region since the 1950s, although there are references to their cultivation in India from 4,000 years ago. Its expansion around the world is a consequence of the maritime mercantile voyages of the 16th century. It is a rustic tree, well adapted to the coastal Mediterranean climate of mild winters. It grows on the slopes closest to the sea in the provinces of Malaga and Granada. Their size is small, although they can reach several meters in height in their natural state. Our mangoes receive the same affection that a father and a mother give to their children so that they do not miss a detail in their life span. We work in accordance with the rules of Organic Farming, also we purchase products from Km0 to promote the local economy and reduce CO² emissions. Your adoption is 8 years old and its productive life is 40 years. For as long as you want to keep your adoption, and we can continue taking care of it, you can renew year after year. If your adoption stops being able to produce for any reason, we will replace it with an other, and we guarantee your delivery from the produce of others for that season. Your mango tree produces an average of 15kg of mangoes each season. You do not have to commit to ordering the entire harvest though. Each season you can decide how much you want to reserve, and you pay the maintenance cost according to that amount. This way you only pay for what you plan to consume, and we can offer any surplus harvest to others.

What will you receive?

You can reserve between 2 and 3 boxes for the season, and then progressively plan the delivery of your boxes for any of the delivery dates available in the shipment calendar. Shipping format: __5kg box of mangoes__ * Osteen (September-October): ovoid-elongated shape, medium-large size, skin with a very characteristic purple hue and orange, yellow or greenish tones, has a low amount of fiber, pulp with a sweet and slightly sour flavour * Keitt (October - November): ovoid-oblong shape, large size, green and pink skin, has low fiber content, pulp with a sweet and slightly sour taste * Farming in conversion to biodynamic farming since 2018 * The box includes some extra fruits, in case some of them arrive damaged * Picked the day before shipment at their optimal point of ripeness and shipped in a cardboard box without plastics * Our farm is not a screw factory: each fruit is unique in appearance and size * One kilo contains between 1 and 5 fruits (the box contains 6-15 fruits approximately, depending on the size) * It is a climacteric fruit which is harvested when it reaches physiological maturity; after being picked from the tree it then continues to ripen until it has reached its optimum point for consumption * Important note: the fruits usually arrive hard; to ripen them, keep them at room temperature until they are ready to eat; if you receive some fruit that is already ripe, you can either eat it straight away or keep it in the fridge Do you know when a mango is ready to eat? It’s simple, it just requires a little attention. Ripening takes time so just wait a bit and nature will act. The first thing you have to do is look at its colour, as it is possible that it turns orange and gets red tones. Then use your hands to feel each piece; If it gives in a little to pressure over most of its surface, you are about to make a tropical experience… store the fruit in the fridge or eat it up!

When will you receive it?

Our mangoes will be ready to ship from mid-September to mid-November, but every year is different, we will update you as the date approaches!

Why should you adopt?
Know who, how and where your food is produced. Source your food in a conscious, direct and consistent manner.
Buying without intermediaries allows the producer to obtain better prices. This helps generate better jobs and social standards in rural areas.
When you adopt something, you allow the producer to ensure the sale at a fixed price and to produce on demand. This also avoids wasting food that is grown without being sold.
It supports producers who strive for environmentally friendly packaging and cultivation practices.
