The project

Adopt a nectarine tree from the farm "Finca Charca El Poleo" in Granja de Torrehermosa (Spain) and receive your harvest in the form of organic nectarines at home. Jose María will take care of your adoption and take its picture. Also, you will be able to download the adoption certificate and, if you wish, plan your visit to the farm. You do not enter into any long-term commitment: once you receive your harvest and you enjoyed the experience, you may decide to renew and extend the adoption.

What do you adopt?

You adopt a nectarine tree from our farm in Granja de Torrehermosa (Spain). Cultivation certified organic by the European Union since 2015. During the process of adoption you can choose a name which we will use to identify your nectarine tree. Although we often hear that the nectarine is a cross between peach and plum, this isn't actually true. This tree, which has the scientific name *Prunus Persica var. nectarina* is a variety of the peach that arose from spontaneous natural mutations. This variety, originally from ancient Persia, was introduced into the Mediterranean Basin by the Romans, who were responsible for the expansion of the crop across the West, having been attracted by its organoleptic characteristics. We grow different varieties of nectarine in order to adapt to market demand and offer a long season with a staggered harvest. All the varieties give us fruits with smooth skin and an intense red colour, with a white pulp (Big White, Nectawhite and Garaco) or yellow pulp (Big Bang, Luciana, Big Top and Sunred). What's more, as our commitment to the environment entails more than simply gaining certificates, we carry out additional operations beyond the requirements by the regulatory council, such as fostering biodiversity by using mowed plant covers to make mulch and having our own worm composting zone to take advantage of plant waste and fertilise our trees. When we planted the trees, we wanted to focus on two key aspects for us: soil erosion and water optimisation. That's why we planted our trees following the contours of the terrain, thereby avoiding strong water currents that would cause major erosion. If you're interested, you can come visit our farm and observe the distribution of this crop due to contour farming. Your adoption is 6 years old and its productive life is around 30 years. For as long as you want to keep it and we can continue taking care of it, you can renew your adoption year after year. If your adoption dies, we will replace it with no additional cost assuring the delivery of your harvest from others. Your adoption produces an average of 19.8kg of organic nectarines each season. You do not have to commit to the consumption of the whole harvest. Each season you may decide what quantity to reserve and pay the maintenance in accordance with that amount. This way you will only pay for what you consume and will be able to sell any remaining harvest to others.

What will you receive?

During harvest season you can progressively receive the quantity of harvest that you reserve on the moment of adoption. You will be able to receive a minimum of 3 boxes, which can be increased up to 9 boxes according to your needs. Shipping format: __2,2kg box of organic nectarines__ * Nectarines with red skin and white pulp (from May to June, and early August): we grow the Big White, Nectawhite and Garaco varieties * Nectarines with red skin and yellow pulp (from mid-June to early August): we grow the Big Bang, Luciana, Big Top and Sunred varieties * Regardless of the colour of the pulp, all our varieties offer similar organoleptic characteristics, with an aromatically complex pulp alongside a sweet and intense flavour, with a touch of sourness that varies according to the level of ripeness * Organic farming certified by the European Organic Farming label since 2015 * Harvest on request, shipped without wax or preservative treatments in a cardboard box without plastics * The box includes some extra fruits, in case some of them arrive damaged * One kilo contains between 6 and 12 fruits (the box contains between 12 and 24 fruits depending on the size) * If you keep them in a fresh and airy place, they can last 7 days in good condition (if you want them to last longer, you can keep them in the fridge) * It is a climacteric fruit that will continue to ripen once you receive it

When will you receive it?

We normally start the nectarine harvest in the month of May and continue until August. As each year is different, we'll adapt the delivery dates as best as we can.

Why should you adopt?
Know who, how and where your food is produced. Source your food in a conscious, direct and consistent manner.
Buying without intermediaries allows the producer to obtain better prices. This helps generate better jobs and social standards in rural areas.
When you adopt something, you allow the producer to ensure the sale at a fixed price and to produce on demand. This also avoids wasting food that is grown without being sold.
It supports producers who strive for environmentally friendly packaging and cultivation practices.
