The project

Adopt a lemon tree from the farm "Cortijo Ana Maria" in Valle de Abdalajis (Spain) and receive your harvest in the form of organic lemons and grapefruits at home. Margarita will take care of your adoption and take its picture. Also, you will be able to download the adoption certificate and, if you wish, plan your visit to the farm. You do not enter into any long-term commitment: Although your adoption will be renewed automatically, you will always be informed in advance and may decide to cancel your adoption at any time as long as the preparation has not yet begun.

What do you adopt?

You adopt a lemon tree from our farm in Valle de Abdalajis (Spain). Cultivation certified organic by the European Union since 2014. During the process of adoption you can choose a name which we will use to identify your lemon tree. At Cortijo Ana Maria we grow two varieties of lemons, Fino and Verna, which are the trees up for adoption. These trees have been grown organically since they were planted and practically we can harvest fruit all year round with them. The trees of both lemon varieties are robust, prolific and medium-sized (as they are still growing), and don't grow taller than two to three metres. The Verna variety is one of the most widely grown in Spain. Although its exact origin is unknown, it is thought to have been introduced into Murcia from the Italian Monachello variety. It flowers twice a year and when it's harvested while the fruit is still green, it's known as a Rodrejo lemon (it's ripe but still not yellow because it hasn't received enough cold). The Fino variety differs because it has lots of thorns and is a little more sensitive to cold than the Verna. In the same box, you'll receive grapefruits of the Star Ruby variety. These grapefruits are delicious and, just like the lemons, have been grown organically since 2014. The Star Ruby grapefruit has a sweeter juice than other varieties. Grapefruit trees aren't very tall and don't exceed a height of three to four metres. They flower in the month of April, when the aroma of blossom permeates the air. Our farm is family-run and our crops respect the environment from the moment they're planted. Your adoption is 8 years old and its productive life is around 30 years. For as long as you want to keep it and we can continue taking care of it, you can renew your adoption year after year. If your adoption dies, we will replace it with no additional cost assuring the delivery of your harvest from others. The average yield is 24kg of organic lemons and grapefruits each season. You do not have to commit to the consumption of the whole harvest. Each season you may decide what quantity to reserve and pay the maintenance in accordance with that amount. This way you will only pay for what you consume and will be able to sell any remaining harvest to others.

What will you receive?

During the season, you will be able to receive the harvest that you are reserving now: a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 4 boxes. Once you paid for the adoption, you will be able to plan your shipments from your user account. Shipping format: __1kg box of organic lemons and 5kg of organic grapefruits__ * Verna lemon (April-July): elongated shape, medium-large size, almost seedless and low acidity, natural source of vitamin C * Fino lemon (October-April): oval-shaped, yellow or green in colour, with a thin, smooth rind, pale yellow, acidic pulp * Star Ruby grapefruit (December-April): flattened shape, thick-skinned, slightly rough and reddish pulp, sweet and sour taste, almost seedless * Mixed box with 1kg of organic lemons and 5kg of organic grapefruits * Organic farming certified by the European Organic Farming label since 2014 * They are not treated with wax or preservatives (you can use the peel) * We do not store the fruit in cold chambers, they go directly from the tree to your doorstep * Our trees are not a screw factory: each fruit is unique in appearance and size * One kilo of lemons contains between 5 and 10 fruits * One kilo of grapefruits contains between 3 and 6 fruits * If you keep them in a fresh and airy place, they can last 2-3 weeks in good condition (if you want them to last longer, you can keep them in the fridge) * You'll see that the first lemons of the season may have a greenish hue, but over the weeks they'll take on the typical yellow tone of this variety

When will you receive it?

Lemons and grapefruits are both in season in the winter, so you'll receive your fruit from late November to late February.

Why should you adopt?
Know who, how and where your food is produced. Source your food in a conscious, direct and consistent manner.
Buying without intermediaries allows the producer to obtain better prices. This helps generate better jobs and social standards in rural areas.
When you adopt something, you allow the producer to ensure the sale at a fixed price and to produce on demand. This also avoids wasting food that is grown without being sold.
It supports producers who strive for environmentally friendly packaging and cultivation practices.
