Adopt a grapefruit tree from the farm "Finca Alcobilla" in La Joya (Spain) and receive your harvest in the form of organic grapefruits at home. The Farmer Margarita will take care of your adoption and take its picture. Also, you will be able to download the adoption certificate and, if you wish, plan your visit to the farm. You do not enter into any long-term commitment: once you receive your harvest and you enjoyed the experience, you may decide to renew and extend the adoption.
Adopt a grapefruit tree that we cultivate under the Organic Farming regulations of the European Union since 2008. During the process of adoption you can choose a name which we will use to identify your grapefruit tree. Finca La Alcobilla is located in the Vega Antequerana region in Málaga, Spain, and is used for the organic cultivation of grapefruits, as well as other citrus fruits such as lemons, oranges and mandarins. We grow the Star Ruby variety of grapefruits, grafted onto *Citrus macrophylla* rootstocks, which give them sturdier and healthier root systems. All citrus trees are very similar and when they aren't bearing fruit, it's difficult to tell the difference between them. As a rule of thumb, grapefruits have broader and thicker leaves than other citrus fruits, while the trees tend towards dwarfism and reach a height of around 2.5 metres. Grapefruits flower in the month of April, one of my favourite moments as the aroma of blossom permeates the air. We have around eight hundred grapefruit trees on our finca, producing an average of one hundred kilos per tree per season. We planted the grapefruit trees in 2008 in order to diversify the production of citrus fruits, as we wanted to have a little bit of everything. By conviction, we've only ever grown organically in line with European Union regulations and we use drip irrigation to take advantage of all the water. We're a family business that was founded by my father Antonio Pérez Postigo in 1991, which my brother David and I later took over as managers. We focus on the cultivation of citrus fruits because the climate in our region is perfect for producing fruit of an excellent quality. The productive life of a grapefruit tree is around 30 years. For as long as you want to keep it and we can continue taking care of it, you can renew your adoption year after year. If your grapefruit tree dies, we will replace it with no additional cost and assuring the delivery of your harvest from others. A grapefruit tree from our farm produces an average of 25 kg each season. You do not have to commit to the consumption of the whole harvest. Each season you may decide what quantity to reserve and pay the maintenance in accordance with the amount you reserve. This way you will only pay for what you consume and we can plan and sell the remaining harvest amount to others.
During harvest season you can progressively receive the quantity of harvest that you reserve on the moment of adoption. You will be able to receive a minimum of 3 boxes, which can be increased up to 5 boxes according to your needs. Shipping format: __5kg of organic Star Ruby grapefruit__ * Star Ruby grapefruit (from December to early April): slightly flattened balloon shape, thick yellowish peel, ruby (reddish) flesh full of juice, slightly bitter taste and usually seedless * Organic farming certified by the European Organic Farming seal since 2008 * Harvest on request, shipped without wax or preservative treatments in a cardboard box without plastics * One kilo contains between 3 and 6 fruits * In one tree you have everything from small to large fruits, so your grapefruits will be heterogeneous * If you keep them in a fresh and airy place, they can last 2-3 weeks in good condition (if you want them to last longer, you can keep them in the fridge) The Star Ruby variety has a sweeter juice than other types of grapefruit. This fruit can be enjoyed in different ways, with the most commonplace being to slice it and eat it directly. Meanwhile, it's popular served as a juice. What’s more, the bitter taste of grapefruit means that many people use it for cooking.
When will you receive it?
The Farmer will collect your harvest on demand and just before shipment so you will receive it fresh, not treated with wax or other preservatives. At our farm we make sure that the fruit is of an excellent quality by harvesting it between December and early April.
