The project

Adopt a lentil field from "Fastuchera" in Cammarata (Italy) and receive your harvest in the form of organic lentils at home. Nicola will take care of your adoption and take its picture. Also, you will be able to download the adoption certificate and, if you wish, plan your visit to the farm. You do not enter into any long-term commitment: once you receive your harvest and you enjoyed the experience, you may decide to renew and extend the adoption.

What do you adopt?

Adopt 60m² of a lentil field that we cultivate under the Organic Farming regulations of the European Union since 2011. The area where the Fastuchera company is located is historically very well-suited to growing lentils. The clayey land makes the lentils very tasty and easy to cook, and in the past peasant families traditionally grew a small plot of them to supplement and enrich their low-protein diet. We sow our lentils at the end of December. Unlike other more rustic leguminous plants, they have a poor resistance to weeds, are sensitive to very high temperatures while they are flowering and, are equipped with only a small root system, prone to suffer during droughts. During the different phases of growth, a series of weeding interventions are necessary to help them. They are carried out manually in the open field, either with gloves or with the aid of small hoes. It is a tiring but enjoyable job, in close contact with the soil and essential for top-quality produce. The harvest takes place in June, during the early hours of the morning when the seedlings are still green: just before the field starts turning yellow. Once harvested, they are placed in sheaves and left to dry on-site under the sun for a few days. Threshing, carried out with a combine harvester for cereals in a fixed location. It takes place during the hottest hours of the day in order to make it easier for the seeds to be extracted from the small pods. The collection of the lentils is immediately followed by a first mechanical selection, necessary to remove other seeds and any foreign bodies, and to avert the presence of weevils, an insect that attacks them during their final phase of ripening. To prevent any infestations and definitively neutralise any insect larvae or eggs, a heat reduction is carried out at -18° for a few days. Finally, in September, the lentils are sifted once again with an optical sorter to bring out the best ones and are then packaged in paper bags. Each lentil field bears an average of 3kg of organic lentils per season.

What will you receive?

Each season we will send you a box with: 3 x __Organic green Mignon lentils __(1kg, paper bag) This year we sowed Mignon lentils in the field, highly appreciated both for their excellent flavour and for how easy they are to cook. They have a small, round shape and an intense green colour. Once the bag has been opened, we advise that you keep them in a glass jar and in a cool, dry place. If you do this, our legumes can be kept in a good condition for more than a year. The lentils can be cooked right away in the pot with no soaking, but nevertheless we recommend that you do it for a couple of hours before cooking them in order to make them easier to digest and to support the natural process. Our lentils remain compact when cooked, making for dishes with a soft consistency and a delicate flavour. Lentils are a legume that you can cook in so many ways. You may combine them with your favourite cereals, as a topping for rice or in a soup. You can also use them to accompany meat or vegetable dishes. If you prefer them in cold dishes, you can cook them and use them in your salads.

When will you receive it?

The lentils will be shipped along with our other products in autumn, once the entire process of harvesting and cleaning is finished.

Why should you adopt?
Know who, how and where your food is produced. Source your food in a conscious, direct and consistent manner.
Buying without intermediaries allows the producer to obtain better prices. This helps generate better jobs and social standards in rural areas.
When you adopt something, you allow the producer to ensure the sale at a fixed price and to produce on demand. This also avoids wasting food that is grown without being sold.
It supports producers who strive for environmentally friendly packaging and cultivation practices.
