Adopt a cow from the flock of "Engelnhof" in Papenburg (Germany) and receive your Bioland organic Papenburg Sunset cheese at home. Ludger will take care of your adoption and take its picture. You will also be able to download the adoption certificate, and if you wish, plan your visit to the farm. As the production coming from one cow is big, the adoption is shared among various people. If you wish to have a bigger share, you may adopt more than once. You do not enter into any long-term commitment: Although your adoption will be renewed automatically, you will always be informed in advance and may decide to cancel your adoption at any time in case the preparation has not started yet.
You adopt a cow from our farm in Papenburg (Germany). The livestock farming and the produce are both certified as organic by the European Union and as Bioland as of 2016. Our black & white and red & white Holstein cows enjoy the fresh, green North German grass: from spring through summer until autumn outside on our pastures around the farm, in winter in our friendly, modern and spacious barn with an outside yard. The Holstein Frisian cattle was bred from the typical German “Schwarzbunte” (black & white) cow with roots in Holstein and Friesland, so it has its origin in our area. Outdoor grazing is a Bioland requirement, which I am very happy about. Seeing our cows grazing on pasture simply makes me feel happy and satisfied. On average, each cow has 8m² space in the barn, 6m² are mandatory (on the pasture it is 400m², there we offer 500m²). Since we are an organic farm, we are not allowed to dehorn our animals without special permission for exceptional cases. However, since we have an open barn where cows move freely - our cows are not tethered - the cows can hurt each other (especially in scuffles). For this reason, we have decided to breed cows that naturally do not have a predisposition for horns (polled). In addition to our own fresh grass from the meadows, our cows get our farm-own silage, hay and straw, as well as purchased organic concentrated feed. We also sow legumes such as clover and alfalfa in the grass mixture to provide enough protein to our cows. At Engelnhof, we have been using nurse-raised calves for several years. This means that an older cow (wet nurse) takes over the rearing of 2-4 calves, so they live together in a barn for the first 3 months after birth (from spring to fall also all together on the pasture) and the calves suckle the milk directly from her. All calves at Engelnhof are raised on real whole milk. Your adoption is 5 years old and its productive life is around 7 years. For as long as you want to keep it and we can continue taking care of it, you can renew your adoption year after year. If your adoption dies, we will replace it with no additional cost assuring the delivery of your harvest from others. Our cows are milked for an average of five years, at about 7 years of age a cow leaves our farm due to old age. We have them slaughtered in a small farmers' cooperative about 65km away to avoid long transport distances. Our Bioland meat is in great demand. Your adoption produces an average of 4000l of Bioland organic raw cow's milk each season. With this amount we can produce around 400kg of Bioland organic Papenburg Sunset cheese. 200 CrowdFarmers share an adoption who receive a box with 2kg of Bioland organic Papenburg Sunset cheese. All our cheese is lovingly made by our cheesemaker Werner from morning warm raw milk in our farmstead dairy.
Each season, meaning twice a year, we will send you a box with: 2 x __Papenburger Sunset Bioland organic cheese__ (approx. 1kg each) This is our first cheese that is produced and shipped completely plastic-free! This Gouda-style organic cheese has its unique characteristic in its naturally edible red smear rind. This cheese is a must for all cheese connoisseurs. The artisan raw milk cheese is characterized by its hearty noble taste and its creamy to firm texture. It almost resembles mountain cheese. This cheese makes by far the most work in our cheese dairy. But the result is worth it, we are really happy with it! In the first weeks it has to be brushed daily with red smear culture, then after two weeks until it is sold every two days. That means daily manual work. A big advantage is that it can do without vacuum packaging due to its own rind. Thus, we no longer need plastic in this project. __Shelf life__: Stored in a cool and dry place at about 14°C, the whole loaves keep up to two months and of course continue to ripen. Once cut, it is best to store it in a cheese tin in the refrigerator (at 8°C) and cover the cut to keep it from drying out. It should keep this way for about 2 weeks. If you want to keep the whole cheese loaf for a longer period of time, we recommend washing the loaf with salt water once a week. Otherwise, the formation of harmless milk mould on the rind might occur. In this case, you can simply wash or brush it off. __Ingredients__: Raw Bioland organic cow milk, cheese culture, calf rennet, salt, red smear bacteria. Thanks to its delicious, edible and cheese-protecting red smear rind, we will most likely be able to ship this cheese completely plastic-free! When will you receive it?
