The project

Adopt a lemon tree from the "El Carrascal" farm in Fortuna (Spain) and receive your organic lemons and grapefruits at home. Carmen will take care of your adoption and take its picture. You will also be able to download the adoption certificate, and if you wish, plan your visit to the farm. You do not enter into any long-term commitment: Although your adoption will be renewed automatically, you will always be informed in advance and may decide to cancel your adoption at any time as long as the preparation has not yet begun.

What do you adopt?

You adopt a lemon tree from our farm in Fortuna (Spain). The cultivation here is certified as organic by the European Union as of 2012. When placing the adoption you can choose a name which we will use to identify your lemon tree. Lemon trees belong to the Rutaceae family. Our lemon trees are the oldest trees on the farm. There are two different varieties, the Finos or Primofiori, which are the winter crop, from November to March-April, and the Vernas, which are the summer crop, from April to July-August. They were planted in the early 80s a few years apart. Our lemon trees are traditional trees, more than forty years old, grafted on bitter orange trees, which gives them their high quality. Lemons are very typical of the Region of Murcia. The climatic characteristics of the area mean that lemons develop very well and since citrus fruit has been grown in Spain, lemons have been grown in these areas. Lemon is also very present in the gastronomy of our region. As well as lemons, you will find grapefruit in your box. Grapefruits also belong to the Rutaceae family and it is still a rare crop in this area. This variety has been introduced more recently and is gaining popularity due to the amount of juice from its fruits since the juice content is at least 50%. Its flavor is sour but sweeter than other varieties of grapefruit. It is grafted on a citrange reed foot, which gives it greater resistance to cold, frost, and viruses than usual. Although they are already in full production, our grapefruits are young, as they were planted in 2012. It was a plot in which Verna lemon had previously been grown. But a terrible frost in 2005 washed away the trees and cultivation has since stopped. When I took over the farm in 2007, I was awfully sorry to see the abandoned plot and I finally decided to plant the grapefruits, as they are more resistant to cold and frost. Like everything we produce, from the beginning we do it through organic farming, incorporating biological products that stimulate the uptake of soil resources and atmospheric nitrogen. Our intention is that everything on our farm is done with the utmost respect for the environment, so that our production has the minimum impact on our planet and keeps the soil and water free of pollutants. Your adoption is 41 years old and its maximum lifespan is 60 years. For as long as you want to keep your adoption, and we can continue taking care of it, you can renew year after year. If your adoption stops producing for any reason, we will replace it with another, and guarantee you the delivery from the production of other units. Your lemon tree produces an average of 20kg of lemons each season. You do not have to commit to ordering the entire harvest though. Each season you can decide how much you want to reserve, and you pay the maintenance cost according to that amount. This way you only pay for what you plan to consume, and we can offer any surplus harvest to others.

What will you receive?

During the season, you will be able to receive the harvest that you are reserving now: a minimum of 0 and a maximum of 0 boxes. Once you have paid for the adoption, you will be able to plan your shipments from your user account. Shipping format: __Box of 2kg of organic lemons and 4 kg of organic grapefruits__ * Verna lemon (April-July): elongated shape, medium-large size, almost seedless and low acidity, natural source of vitamin C * Rio Red grapefruit (harvested from November to May): Slightly flattened, with fine yellow-orange skin, red pulp and at least 50% juice, characteristic bittersweet flavor, but sweeter than other grapefruit varieties (less bitter aftertaste on the palate) * Organic farming certified by the European Organic Farming label since 2012 * One kilo of lemons contains between 7 and 9 fruits * One kilo of grapefruits contains between 3 and 4 fruits * Harvested on request, shipped without wax or preservative treatments in a cardboard box without plastics * If you keep them in a fresh and airy place, they can last up to 3 weeks in good condition (if you want them to last longer, you can keep them in the fridge) * You'll see that the first lemons of the season may have a greenish hue, but over the weeks they'll take on the typical yellow tone of this variety

When will you receive it?

We start to have lemon from October, but it is not until the beginning of December that it coincides with grapefruit. Therefore, you can receive this mixed box with grapefruit and lemon from the beginning of December until the end of the season.

Why should you adopt?
Know who, how and where your food is produced. Source your food in a conscious, direct and consistent manner.
Buying without intermediaries allows the producer to obtain better prices. This helps generate better jobs and social standards in rural areas.
When you adopt something, you allow the producer to ensure the sale at a fixed price and to produce on demand. This also avoids wasting food that is grown without being sold.
It supports producers who strive for environmentally friendly packaging and cultivation practices.
