The project

Adopt a walnut tree from the farm "Domaine l'Hermiton" in Montlaur-en-Diois (France) and receive your harvest in the form of organic walnuts at home. The Farmer Charlélie will take care of your adoption and take its picture. Also, you will be able to download the adoption certificate and, if you wish, plan your visit to the farm. As the production coming from one walnut tree is big, the adoption is shared among various people. If you wish to have a bigger share, you may adopt more than once. You do not enter into any long-term commitment: Although your adoption will be renewed automatically, you will always be informed in advance and may decide to cancel your adoption at any time as long as the preparation has not yet begun.

What do you adopt?

You adopt a walnut tree from our farm in Montlaur-en-Diois (France). Cultivation certified organic by the European Union since 1996. Walnuts from the Dauphiné region have historically been recognised for centuries for their varieties and appellations. And in the Diois valley, you’ll be hard pressed not to notice the extent of the cultivated plots. The Franquette variety we grow is known to be very high-yielding, with a hardy and vigorous tree. Its late flowering avoids late spring frosts due to our mountainous climate. Depending on the needs of the plots, the fields are either grass, sown with different types of leguminous plants to provide them with a green manure at each shredding as the season progresses, or earth, harrowed at the start of the season to more quickly warm the tree’s roots, then often worked during the season and finally rolled to obtain a flat surface. We mainly work with the first option. We collect the walnuts from the ground using mechanical tools, before washing them in the agricultural cooperative, drying, grading and packing them before shipment. Your adoption is 36 years old and its productive life is around 100 years. For as long as you want to keep it and we can continue taking care of it, you can renew your adoption year after year. If your adoption dies, we will replace it with no additional cost assuring the delivery of your harvest from others. Your walnut tree produces an average of 15kg of organic walnuts each season. 3 CrowdFarmers will share the adoption, and each one will receive a box containing 5kg of organic walnuts.

What will you receive?

Each season we will send you a box with: __5kg of organic walnuts__ with shell * The walnut kernels have a unique and very fruity taste, with both crunchy and sweet textures * Organic farming certified by the European Organic Farming label since 1996 * They are pre-graded and sorted by blower to give you quality products between 28 and 32mm in size, packed in a cardboard box wedged with kraft paper (collected from other shops for reuse) * Walnuts are eaten as a starter, for example in salads, as a main course or as a dessert like walnut and caramel pie; they also make an excellent snack for athletes or for mountain hikes * Walnuts can be stored for a year: they must be kept at room temperature and protected from light once the shells have been broken and separated from their kernels

When will you receive it?

The harvest usually begins at the end of September and finishes at the end of October. We plan to send your packages at the end of October.

Why should you adopt?
Know who, how and where your food is produced. Source your food in a conscious, direct and consistent manner.
Buying without intermediaries allows the producer to obtain better prices. This helps generate better jobs and social standards in rural areas.
When you adopt something, you allow the producer to ensure the sale at a fixed price and to produce on demand. This also avoids wasting food that is grown without being sold.
It supports producers who strive for environmentally friendly packaging and cultivation practices.
