The project

Adopt an avocado tree from the farm "Dehesa de Cútar" in Cútar (Spain) and receive your harvest in the form of organic avocados at home. Vanesa will take care of your adoption and take its picture. Also, you will be able to download the adoption certificate and, if you wish, plan your visit to the farm. You do not enter into any long-term commitment: once you receive your harvest and you enjoyed the experience, you may decide to renew and extend the adoption.

What do you adopt?

You adopt an avocado tree from our farm in Cútar (Spain). Cultivation certified organic by the European Union since 2014. During the process of adoption you can choose a name which we will use to identify your avocado tree. On our farm in Dehesa de Cútar we grow several types of avocados organically. You will adopt a rough-skinned avocado from the family known as Hass, it can be Hass or Lamb Hass. These avocado trees are similar. The Lamb Hass variety comes from a cross of Hass with the Gwen variety. This crossing made it more vigorous and produced larger fruits. The fruit of Lamb Hass, unlike Hass, darkens on the tree. It also has a faster growth and greater vigour, producing fruits of a larger size. Both varieties are very similar and of excellent quality, the combination of the two makes it possible to extend the season until well into spring. The area where the Dehesa de Cútar farm is located, in the south of the Iberian Peninsula on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea, is one of the northernmost areas where these fruits are grown, due to its favourable microclimate. The trees are not very tall and do not exceed 3-4m in height once they have fully grown since they are pruned to avoid damage during winter storms and to favour harvesting work. Each tree produces an average of 30-40kg of fruit per year. We can send it to your home at its optimum point, very shortly after being harvested, without it being preserved or matured in cold chambers. I am an agronomist, and together with my partner, who is also an agronomist, we decided to opt for organic from the beginning. We are both convinced that agriculture only has a future if it is sustainable, so we do our best to ensure that our grain of sand creates a positive impact on the environment and society. On the farm we grow more subtropical fruits such as mangoes, custard apples, medlars or kumquats. Your adoption is 6 years old and its productive life is around 30 years. For as long as you want to keep it and we can continue taking care of it, you can renew your adoption year after year. If your adoption dies, we will replace it with no additional cost assuring the delivery of your harvest from others. Your avocado tree produces an average of 1kg of organic avocados each season. You do not have to commit to the consumption of the whole harvest. Each season you may decide what quantity to reserve and pay the maintenance in accordance with that amount. This way you will only pay for what you consume and will be able to sell any remaining harvest to others.

What will you receive?

During harvest season you can progressively receive the quantity of harvest that you reserve on the moment of adoption. You will be able to receive a minimum of 0 boxes, which can be increased up to 0 boxes according to your needs. Shipping format: __2,5kg box of organic avocado__ * Hass (December - April): pear-shaped, medium size, rough skin, green colour that turns black when ripe, creamy texture, more intense flavour, higher amount of fat, it is the most popular avocado * Lamb Hass (April - May): pear-shaped, medium-large size, rough skin, green colour that turns black when ripe, creamy texture, more intense flavour, greater amount of fat * Organic farming certified by the European Organic Farming label since 2014 * We do not store the fruit in cold chambers, they go directly from the tree to your doorstep * The box includes some extra fruits, in case some of them arrive damaged * Our trees are not a screw factory: each fruit is unique in appearance and size * One kilo contains between 4 and 8 fruits (the box contains between 12 and 18 fruits depending on the size) * Keep them at room temperature until they are ripe, once they are fully ripe put them in the fridge to keep them longer * It is a climacteric fruit, harvested when it reaches physiological ripeness but continues to evolve after harvesting until it is ready for consumption * Important: The fruits usually arrive hard, keep them at room temperature until they reach they are ready to eat; if you receive an alread ripe piece, you can put it in the fridge or eat it straight away The first thing you should do when you receive the box of avocados is inspect the fruit. Maybe some pieces will arrive ready to eat, but you will most likely have to wait a few days until it reaches the point of consumption. The waiting time may vary from 3 to 15 days, depending on the ripening conditions. If you have to wait, place the avocados in a dry environment. Their ripening will depend on the “breathing” of the fruit, placing them at a higher temperature speeds up “breathing” and thus ripening. Once they begin to give way to the pressure of your fingers and start to give off their aroma, you can place them in the fridge, and you can consume them in about 10 days. You will be able to receive very small avocados in your box, it is not common to find them in the market since they usually have no commercial value, but they are delicious! We call them “baby” avocados, they come from flowers that did not pollinate correctly, so these fruits could fully develop. Not all boxes will include them, but if you come across these fruits, please share your thoughts!

When will you receive it?

Avocados grow on trees throughout the summer and fall thanks to the sunny climate of our region. They will be ready to be harvested during the winter and spring, when they reach their optimum point of maturity. The first variety we ship is Hass (December-April) and then Lamb Hass (April-May). The dates are indicative and depend on the weather conditions.

Why should you adopt?
Know who, how and where your food is produced. Source your food in a conscious, direct and consistent manner.
Buying without intermediaries allows the producer to obtain better prices. This helps generate better jobs and social standards in rural areas.
When you adopt something, you allow the producer to ensure the sale at a fixed price and to produce on demand. This also avoids wasting food that is grown without being sold.
It supports producers who strive for environmentally friendly packaging and cultivation practices.
