The project

Adopt a mango tree from the farm "Dehesa de Cútar" in Cútar (Spain) and receive your harvest in the form of organic mangos at home. Vanesa will take care of your adoption and take its picture. Also, you will be able to download the adoption certificate and, if you wish, plan your visit to the farm. You do not enter into any long-term commitment: once you received your harvest and you enjoyed the experience, you may decide to renew and extend the adoption.

What do you adopt?

Adopt a mango tree that we cultivate under the Organic Farming regulations of the European Union since 2014. During the process of adoption you can choose a name which we will use to identify your mango tree. On our farm in Dehesa de Cútar we grow two types of mangoes organically: the Osteen and the Keitt variety. By cultivating these two varieties we can extend the harvesting period throughout the fall. The mango tree is a tree native to the Indian Ocean area, there are many varieties that have been cultivated for many years. The arrival of Portuguese explorers helped spread this delicious fruit throughout the tropics and subtropics around the world. The area where the Dehesa de Cútar farm is located, in the south of the Iberian Peninsula on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea, is the northernmost area where this fruit is grown, due to its favorable microclimate. The mango trees that we grow here are not very tall and do not exceed 3m in height once they are fully grown. This is due to them being grafted onto a dwarf rootstock so that they do not grow very large. This rootstock is known as Gomera III (native to the Canary Islands). Each tree produces an average of 20kg of fruit per year. You will enjoy a top quality mango, with an exceptional flavor and freshness. We can send it to your home at its optimum point of ripeness, very shortly after being harvested, without it being preserved or ripened in cold chambers. I am an agronomist, and together with my partner, who is also an agronomist, we decided to go organic from the beginning. We are both convinced that agriculture only has a future if it is sustainable, so we do our best to ensure that our grain of sand creates a positive impact on the environment and society. On the farm we grow more subtropical fruits such as avocados, custard apples, medlars or kumquats. The productive life of a mango tree is around 30 years. For as long as you want to keep it and we can continue taking care of it, you can renew your adoption year after year. If your mango tree dies, we will replace it with no additional cost and assuring the delivery of your harvest from others. A mango tree from our farm produces an average of 20kg each season. You do not have to commit to the consumption of the whole harvest. Each season you may decide what quantity to reserve and pay the maintenance in accordance with the amount you reserve. This way you will only pay for what you consume and we can plan and sell the remaining harvest amount to others.

What will you receive?

During harvest season you can progressively receive the quantity of harvest that you reserve at the moment of adoption. You will receive a minimum of 2 boxes, which can be increased up to 4 boxes according to your needs. Shipping format: __5kg box of organic mango__ * Osteen (September - October): ovoid-elongated shape, medium-large size, skin with a very characteristic purple hue and orange, yellow or greenish tones, has a low amount of fiber, pulp with a sweet flavor and slightly sour * Keitt (October - November): ovoid-oblong shape, large size, green and pink skin, has low fiber content, pulp with a sweet taste and a slightly sour * Organic farming certified by the European Organic Farming label since 2012 * Picked the day before shipment at their optimal point of ripeness and shipped in a cardboard box without plastics * The box includes some extra fruits, in case some of them arrive damaged * Our trees are not a screw factory: each fruit is unique in appearance and size * One kilo contains between 1 and 5 fruits (the box contains 12-16 fruits approximately, depending on the size) * It is a climacteric fruit, harvested when it reaches physiological ripeness but continues to evolve after harvesting until it is ready for consumption * Important: The fruits usually arrive hard, keep them at room temperature until they reach they are ready to eat; if you receive an alread ripe piece, you can put it in the fridge or eat it straight away The first thing you should do when you receive the box of mangoes is to inspect the fruit. Maybe some pieces will arrive ready to eat, but you will most likely have to wait a few days until it reaches the optimal point of consumption. The waiting time may vary, it can range from 3 days to 20, depending on the variety and the ripening conditions. If you have to wait, place the mangoes in a dry environment. Their ripening will depend on the respiration of the fruit, placing them at a higher temperature speeds up respiration and thus ripening. Once they begin to give way to the pressure of your fingers and begin to release their aroma, you can place them in the fridge and you can consume them in about 10 days. If for some reason it has become too ripe, you can freeze that pulp to make smoothies or other recipes in the future, dehydrate it or make jams. The Keitt variety can take more than 20 days to ripen, be patient, wrap them in newspaper, place them next to other climacteric fruits to speed up the process. This happens because our mangoes do not go through ripening chambers, and nature takes its time to reach perfection. This variety can produce mangoes up to 1.4kg! It is not common but enjoy it if you get a mango with this weight. You sometimes will receive very small mangoes in your box, it is not common to find them in the market since they usually have no commercial value, but they are delicious! We call them "bonbon" mangoes, they come from flowers that did not pollinate correctly, so these fruits could fully develop and do not have stones inside. Not all boxes will include them, but if you try them please tell me what you think!

Mangoes grow on trees throughout the summer thanks to the sunny climate of our region. They will be ready to be harvested during the fall, when they reach their optimum point of ripeness. The first variety we ship is the Osteen which is harvested earlier (September-October) than the Keitt variety (October-November). The dates are indicative and depend on the weather. Some years we have managed to have mangoes until December!

Why should you adopt?
Know who, how and where your food is produced. Source your food in a conscious, direct and consistent manner.
Buying without intermediaries allows the producer to obtain better prices. This helps generate better jobs and social standards in rural areas.
When you adopt something, you allow the producer to ensure the sale at a fixed price and to produce on demand. This also avoids wasting food that is grown without being sold.
It supports producers who strive for environmentally friendly packaging and cultivation practices.
