You do not enter into any long-term commitment: Although your adoption will be renewed automatically, you will always be informed in advance and may decide to cancel your adoption at any time as long as the preparation has not yet begun.
You adopt an olive tree from our farm in Montalbano Jonico (Italy) that we cultivate following the Organic Farming regulations of the European Union. We are already in the process of converting and expect to be officially certified by 2022. During the process of adoption you can choose a name which we will use to identify your olive tree. The oldest of our olive groves has been in the family for two generations with trees older than 100 years. With time, we have added new groves and olive varieties to our production, with the most recent from 2016, but we continue to care for the trees as we have always done in the family: one by one with natural means and respect for the environment. Our olive farm consists principally of Frantoio and Leccino olive trees, both with a high oil yield (+20%). The Frantoio is a vigorous tree with an ascending shape and glossy grey-green to dark-green foliage, and it bears drop-formed green/purple olives with an aromatic, well-balanced and somewhat pungent flavour. The Leccino is another hardy tree with a semi-weeping form and a beautiful and thick foliage, producing large purple-black olives with a fresh and delicate taste. We have planted a bit of Nocellara and Cima di Melfi olive trees as well to enhance pollination and add a little spice to the oil flavour, both being slightly bitter and spicy, and where the former adds notes of tomatoes and aromatic herbs, the latter has a medium fruity taste of almonds and artichokes. The olives are hand-picked as early as possible in the harvest season, normally in the beginning of November, as the olives have the best combination of aroma and colour. We only harvesrt during the daytime, so as not to disturb the birds that might spend the night in our olive trees. The olives are cold-pressed in the local mill within 12 hours of harvest without chemical additives or any kind of further processing involved. As a result, our oil has a low acidity level and the best conservation qualities. In 2021 we have (re-)started the local tradition of making soap from olive oil. For generations, our family has used excess olive oil to make soap bars, from which large soap pieces were used to wash clothes on washboards and the remaining small pieces were used for hygiene purposes. We wanted to revive this tradition as olive oil soap is a great ecological alternative to the conventional products. We are collaborating with “Felici da Matti”, a social enterprise empowering disadvantaged people with work opportunities for the soap production. The soap bars are handmade and contain only natural ingredients making them 100% biodegradable. Your adoption is 81 years old and its productive life is around 100 years. For as long as you want to keep it and we can continue taking care of it, you can renew your adoption year after year. If your adoption dies, we will replace it with no additional cost assuring the delivery of your harvest from others. Your olive tree produces an average of 4kg of originalProduction each season. With this amount we can produce around 3.95l of extra virgin olive oil and 200g olive oil soap.
Each season we will send you a box with: 5 x __Extra Virgin Olive Oil__ (0,75l, glass bottle) 2 x __100% olive oil soap bars__ (approx. 100g, biodegradable Kraft paper) Superior quality __olive oil__ obtained directly from hand-harvested and cold-pressed olives. The oil is fresh and well balanced in spiciness and bitterness with an intense green color. The taste and aroma are characterized as intensely fruity with shades of grass, artichoke and almonds. With its creamy and velvety texture, the oil is particularly suitable for use directly on salads and soups, but can of course also be used for cooking. To enjoy your extra virgin olive oil with all its organoleptic qualities, we recommend you consume it within 12 months following its delivery. Please store the oil in a dark and cool place (not below 10°C). Extra virgin olive oil needs time for particles and suspensions to settle, so we store the newly extracted oil in stainless-steel tanks from November to January. The tanks are placed underground to obtain a controlled temperature without the use of electricity. The oil is not filtered, but decanted without the loss of nitrogen, and after at least two rounds of decanting, the olive oil is bottled in a special aseptic and controlled room. Our all natural, handmade __olive oil soap bars__ are rich in nutrients and give a very clean and buttery feel despite minimal lather. They provide a very moisturizing effect that lasts for a longer time thanks to the restorative effect of vitamin E and antioxidants, which are naturally found in high amounts in pure olive oil. Particularly suitable for dry and sensitive skin, and suitable for everyday use for the cleaning the face, hands and body. Our olive oil soap is made through the process of saponification. This is where lye (a mix of sodium hydroxide and water) is mixed with oil to turn it into salts. It is a chemical reaction where the triglycerides of the vegetable fats and oils react with the lye. Once the saponification has happened and the raw soap is poured into molds, it will take around 24-48 hours for the process to be complete. The soap is then hand-cut into bars and left to cure for a couple of months. The ingredient list as well as allergen information can be downloaded from "Additional Analyses". Being a natural product, the soap bars are subject to natural weight loss. The weight loss may be as much as 10% and it is part of the natural maturing process of the soap, where water slowly evaporates. We recommend using the bars within 12 months. The soap is packaged in the naturally biodegradable Kraft paper and tied with rope from natural fibers. The label is made from algae paper.
