I used to work many years as an architect and changed the focus of my activities in 2006 when I dedicated myself to developing projects with renewable energy: solar parks and biogas plants. During one of those projects I came into contact with organic banana farmers from the Mao and Montecristi provinces in the North of the Dominican Republic and I started by own organic banana farm. Sharing the facilities with what once were my neighbours and have today become my business partners allowed me to return to Valencia, enabled me to dedicate more time towards my family and develop organic agriculture projects.
When learning about Casa Carlos in 2017 I was impressed by the beauty of the farm and its surroundings, but, above all, by the enormous potential it has for developing and implementing this project. We want to turn Casa Carlos into a reference to how, as we understand it, a modern, sustainable and socially responsible agricultural facility can and should look like:
* We will promote the __regeneration and return of life to the soil__. Consequently, we will have healthy plants and trees that are resistant to pests and illnesses. Healthy trees produce healthy and high-quality fruit. We are building a team with technicians and farmers, enthusiasts convinced by cultivating in harmony with nature. In this group we are integrating people with disabilities, who receive a chance to do real work in a positive and healthy environment.
* We are going to__ generate our own energy with solar panels__ in such a way that the same sun that makes our plants and fruits grow will produce the energy to move the pumps necessary for irrigation and for the teams on the farm.
* We will __rehabilitate the country house__ from the 19th century, which is a protected monument. We will have space to work, accommodation and recreation.
* By integrating __biodynamic agriculture, renewable energy and the rehabilitation of heritage__ we will have the necessary elements to develop a social project which will turn Casa Carlos into:
An information center directed at students and senior citizens where they can learn what the future of agriculture can and should look like.
A training center for organic and biodynamic agriculture.
A place that hosts research programs about this type of agriculture
A center for labor integration and training people with disabilities.
The Casa Carlos farm extends across 170 hectares and is located 40 km North-East of Valencia on a hillside that climbs a gentle slope towards the foothills of the Sierra Calderona Natural Park. 300 meters above sea level, the farm is looking South and is protected from Northern winds by its own mountains.
On our farm we work following the principles and regulations of organic and biodynamic agriculture. In 2019 we started the procedures to obtain the certification of Organic Farming and Demeter. We have a great diversity of plots and crops. In the lower part, occupying 60 hectares you will find the early zone of vegetable cultivation where we are now starting a cultivation of table grapes, yellow kiwis and dragon fruit. On the remaining plots we are cultivating alfalfa to enhance the regeneration of the soil.
On the middle slope we have the citrus area with 5 varieties among oranges and clementines, which occupies another 60 hectares and which contains in its interior various undiscovered mountain enclaves, home to a wide variety of native species, insects and microorganisms.
Scattered along various zones, we have another 15 hectares with almond, olive and carob trees. On the upper part, the farm has a 35 hectares wide mount with a Mediterranean pine grove giving shelter to beehives with the bees that pollinate our trees.
All of these conditions, a lot of sun, plenty of water, mild temperatures but with an important thermal gap between night and day, hours that are just the right amount of cold during winter, together with an enormous biodiversity and a very fertile and loamy soil make Casa Carlos an ideal place to cultivate and obtain fruits of a high quality, texture and flavour.
