The project

Adopt an jujube tree from the farm "Casa Cañada" in Villamalea (Spain) and receive your Demeter organic jujube at home. Julio César will take care of your adoption and take its picture. You will also be able to download the adoption certificate, and if you wish, plan your visit to the farm. You do not enter into any long-term commitment: Although your adoption will be renewed automatically, you will always be informed in advance and may decide to cancel your adoption at any time in case the preparation has not started yet.

What do you adopt?

You adopt an jujube tree from our farm in Villamalea (Spain). The cultivation is certified as organic by the European Union as of 2018, and as Demeter as of 2018. When placing the adoption you can choose a name which we will use to identify your jujube tree. An archaeophyte or minor fruit tree is an agroforestry specie whose fruits are used on a small scale either as food or for other purposes, and this is the jujube. In this group we also find other trees such as pomegranate, quince, mulberry, azarole, date-plum, medlar, etc. many reduced to landscape use, and others cultivated on a large scale. In general, these forest fruit trees are adapted to the continental plateau climate and have low water and nutritional requirements. The jujube was domesticated in South and Southeast Asia more than 4,000 years ago for its edible fruit, and some 400 different varieties have been described. It is a tree of forest character, which tolerates a wide range of temperatures and rainfall, which means that we can find it spontaneously and in the wild from the north of India, to introduced, normalised and marginally cultivated in the deserts of Tunisia. In Israel, especially in the Arava Valley, it is the second most commonly cultivated archaeophyte or minor fruit tree, and there you can find specimens up to 300 years old. This plant has been used to produce musical instruments. The famous Stradivarius violins or other musical wind instruments such as the tenora, the gralla, the dulzaina or the chirimía are made with their wood, of great quality. Our jujube trees are of the primitive Mozera variety, appreciated in the rural world for its large size and the quality of its fruits, of great flavour and texture. In Casa Cañada we started to cultivate jujube in 2015 always following agricultural practices according to our philosophy and respect for the environment. For this we carry out an organic, bio-integral and biodynamic cultivation. We grow in traditional Spanish extensive dry land farming and our trees only receive rainwater. In addition, we use a native rootstock (*Ziziphus jujuba sylvestris*), an Iberian archaeophytic species. It can be said that Casa Cañada has always opted for organic farming, so our certification in the Organic Agriculture Committee in 2017 did not involve any great effort, we had already been meeting the requirements for years! Later, we decided to go one step further and in the same year we were the first producers of Biodynamic jujube with Demeter seal. However, seeking to reduce the impact of man on the natural environment, and make responsible use of water, we were certified in 2019 as a Bio-Integral crop with the ARBORIGEN seal. Your adoption is 5 years old and its maximum lifespan is 80 years. For as long as you want to keep your adoption, and we can continue taking care of it, you can renew year after year. If your adoption stops producing for any reason, we will replace it with another, and guarantee you the delivery from the production of other units. Your jujube tree produces an average of 1kg of Demeter organic jujube each season.

What will you receive?

We will send you the box that you choose when placing the adoption. __Large box:__ 2 x __organic dehydrated Jujube__ (500g each, jute bag) __Small box:__ 1 x __organic dehydrated Jujube__ (500g, jute bag) Receive your jujube box of the __Mozera__ variety, dehydrated, with a fleshy texture and sweet taste. If you have never tried it, it is difficult to describe its flavour, some say that its taste reminds them of apples, but since it's dehyrated its texture is more like that of the date although less sweet. We send you the dehydrated fruit, although it could also be consumed fresh. In countries such as Lebanon or Jordan they usually consume jujube as an appetizer or integrated into dishes, and even as a dessert after meals. In China and Korea it is very common to prepare a tea with this fruit, in addition to using it to prepare sweet preserves, wines or vinegars. In some regions of the Iberian Peninsula, jujube have been used as a base to make homemade artisanal liquors. The fruits are introduced into bottles and covered with some sweet alcohol, such as anise or cazalla. They are usually left to macerate for weeks or months so that the flavour of the jujube manages to stand out. We recommend that you store the jujube at room temperature, protected from direct sunlight and heat sources. Its low moisture content helps to extend its shelf life up to one year. Store them in the fridge during the hottest months, to keep insects away. Remember that these jujube have not received any post-harvest conservation treatment. We take care of all the phases in detail to offer the best product: during the harvest, we dedicate the mornings to the collection of the jujube. Subsequently, we dry the fruit for 15 days outdoors but in shade, and store it until we have all the jujube harvested and dehydrated.

When will you receive it?

The harvest of the jujube in our area is normally done in mid-September and lasts about a month. You will receive your jujube in April. Our jujube preparation process is somewhat complex, and we have set this delivery date to ensure there are no delays.
