Adopt a papaya plant from the farm "Casa Alta" in Vélez-Málaga (Spain) and receive your harvest in the form of organic papayas at home. Carlos will take care of your adoption and take its picture. Also, you will be able to download the adoption certificate and, if you wish, plan your visit to the farm. You do not enter into any long-term commitment: once you receive your harvest and you enjoyed the experience, you may decide to renew and extend the adoption.
Adopt a papaya plant that we cultivate under the Organic Farming regulations of the European Union since 2018. During the process of adoption you can choose a name which we will use to identify your papaya plant. Papaya is a tropical plant native to Central America, although today it has been naturalised in a variety of tropical areas. Even though it can reach a height of up to ten metres in a very short time, it's a short-living tree-like plant with a straight and hollow trunk. Papaya was cultivated long before the discovery of America and was spread across the world as a result of trading journeys. After years of studying and testing, we found that the variety that best adapts to the Mediterranean climate of southern Spain is Sweet Sense. It's famed for its sweet taste and delicate palate, as well as its inner and outer beauty. Another attractive characteristic of this variety is its very pleasant and appetising smell. We grow papayas on our farm called Casa Alta, which has been certified as organic since 2018. In recent times, my partners have been undertaking research to secure a tasty papaya outside the tropics. This isn't easy, as our climate lacks heat hours in winter, but the proximity to the Mediterranean (just one kilometre) and the hours of research have allowed us to achieve something exceptional at Casa Alta: the production of tasty papayas in Europe. They need to be grown in a greenhouse to take advantage of the few hours of sun available in winter. The productive life of a papaya plant is around 2 years. For as long as you want to keep it and we can continue taking care of it, you can renew your adoption year after year. If your papaya plant dies, we will replace it with no additional cost and assuring the delivery of your harvest from others. A papaya plant from our farm produces an average of 24kg each season. You do not have to commit to the consumption of the whole harvest. Each season you may decide what quantity to reserve and pay the maintenance in accordance with the amount you reserve. This way you will only pay for what you consume and we can plan and sell the remaining harvest amount to others.
During harvest season you can progressively receive the quantity of harvest that you reserve at the moment of adoption. You will receive a minimum of 2 boxes, which can be increased up to 5 boxes according to your needs. Soft and juicy texture on the palate * Organic farming certified by European organic label since 2018 * Picked the day before shipment at their optimal point of ripeness and shipped in a cardboard box without plastics * Our plants are not a screw factory: each fruit is unique in appearance and size * One kilo contains between 1 and 2 fruits * Keep them at room temperature until they are ripe, once they are fully ripe put them in the fridge to keep them longer * It is a climacteric fruit, harvested when it reaches physiological ripeness but continues to evolve after harvesting until it is ready for consumption * Important: The fruits usually arrive hard, keep them at room temperature until they reach they are ready to eat; if you receive an alread ripe piece, you can put it in the fridge or eat it straight away Our papayas are harvested when the skin turns from green to yellow, which is known as the 'pintón' state. As they're a climacteric fruit, the ripening process will continue after harvest. To ensure proper ripening, it's important to keep them at an approximate room temperature of 20°C. Once they soften and yield to the pressure of your fingers, it's advisable to keep them in the fridge at 7°C, but not for long as they lose a lot of water. We recommend eating them as a fruit, as you'll be impressed by their juiciness and flavour. That said, you can also use them to prepare ice cream, soft drinks and jellies. Papayas are a low-calorie and highly digestive food. You can also eat them green as boiled fruit. As well as being low in calories, they contain very little protein and fat. And they’re rich in Vitamins A, C and potassium. What's more, they contain papain. __Please note__: The papaya must be harvested very close to the point of consumption, so it is likely to arrive with aesthetic damage during transport; even so, the fruit should arrive in perfect organoleptic condition.
When will you receive it?
Our papayas are grown in a greenhouse, as this is the only way to achieve high-quality sweet papayas in Europe. We pick them weekly on the day before dispatch, choosing the ones that are close to ripening (according to their 'pintón' colour). You can receive our papayas from December to June of the following year.
