The project

Adopt a pomegranate tree from the "Verger de Alicia" farm in Valencia (Spain) and receive your pomegranates at home. Gonzalo will take care of your adoption and take its picture. You will also be able to download the adoption certificate, and if you wish, plan your visit to the farm. You do not enter into any long-term commitment: Although your adoption will be renewed automatically, you will always be informed in advance and may decide to cancel your adoption at any time as long as the preparation has not yet begun.

What do you adopt?

You adopt a pomegranate tree from our farm in Valencia (Spain) that we cultivate following the Organic Farming regulations of the European Union. We are already in the process of converting and expect to be officially certified by 2024. When placing the adoption you can choose a name which we will use to identify your pomegranate tree. The pomegranate, or *Punica granatum*, is a tree native to South Asia, Persia, and Afghanistan. It was a highly appreciated fruit in dry areas as its thick and leathery skin would prevent it from drying out, which meant that it could be transported over long distances without impairing quality. These aspects may have made it one of the most widely grown fruits since ancient times. The deciduous tree is vigorous and productive, reaching up to six metres in height, although you can also find some shrub-like trees. Most of its branches end in the shape of a thorn, which can lead to scratches on some of its fruits. The trees blossom between May and June, covering the fields with a blanket of deep red, bell-shaped flowers. You will be adopting a pomegranate of the Wonderful variety, which we cultivate on a plot a short distance away from the main farm, but following the same cultivation philosophy. The Wonderful pomegranate tree originates from California and has therefore adapted very well to our Mediterranean climate. It is one of our favourite varieties because of its intense colour and the flavour of its fruits. This variety has a more sour taste than our traditional varieties. Your adoption is 7 years old and its maximum lifespan is 30 years. For as long as you want to keep your adoption, and we can continue taking care of it, you can renew year after year. If your adoption stops producing for any reason, we will replace it with another, and guarantee you the delivery from the production of other units. Your pomegranate tree produces an average of 25kg of pomegranates each season. You do not have to commit to ordering the entire harvest though. Each season you can decide how much you want to reserve, and you pay the maintenance cost according to that amount. This way you only pay for what you plan to consume, and we can offer any surplus harvest to others.

What will you receive?

During the season, you will be able to receive the harvest that you are reserving now: a minimum of 1 and a maximum of 1 boxes. Once you paid for the adoption, you will be able to plan your shipments from your user account. Shipping format:__5 kg box of pomegranates__ * Wonderful (October-November): more of a sour flavour compared to other varieties; medium-large and round; very deep red colour, both inside and outside; small and semi-hard arils (seeds) * Farming in transition to organic farming since 2021 * Harvest on request, shipped without wax or preservative treatments in a cardboard box without plastics * Our trees are not a screw factory: each fruit is unique in appearance and size * One kilo contains between 3 and 5 fruits (the box contains 24 fruits approximately, depending on the size) * If you keep them in a fresh and airy place, they can last up to 3 weeks in good condition (if you want them to last longer, you can keep them in the fridge)

When will you receive it?

Pomegranates don't ripen after harvest, so they must be picked fully ripe to ensure the best quality for consumption. The Wonderful variety is harvested in the month of October. When you receive them, eat the ripest ones first.

Why should you adopt?
Know who, how and where your food is produced. Source your food in a conscious, direct and consistent manner.
Buying without intermediaries allows the producer to obtain better prices. This helps generate better jobs and social standards in rural areas.
When you adopt something, you allow the producer to ensure the sale at a fixed price and to produce on demand. This also avoids wasting food that is grown without being sold.
It supports producers who strive for environmentally friendly packaging and cultivation practices.
